For others, the opposite rings true, with this set of individuals taking an iconoclastic approach towards Old Glory. A\u00a0handful of contemporary artists have chosen to explore this fascinating dichotomy, appropriating its image to create works that challenge viewers&#8217; perceptions and beliefs. At this year&#8217;s Art Basel Miami, NYC\u00a0gallery Queer Thoughts\u00a0presented an artwork\u00a0by Puppies Puppies featuring\u00a0American flags tiled across the\u00a0floor. When questioned on the motives behind showing this work,\u00a0gallery director Sam Lipp told Artnet, &#8220;It was conceived before the election, but afterwards we pushed to make it happen.&#8221;<br \/>\nIn light of this controversial piece, we look back on\u00a010 other works that transform the stars and stripes into an entirely new vision of hope and loss.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41463\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jasper-johns.jpg\" alt=\"American Flag in contemporary art: Jasper Johns\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1028\" \/> &#8220;Flag&#8221; (1954-1955) by Jasper Johns, image courtesy of jasper-johns.org<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Flag&#8221; by Jasper Johns<\/h3>\n<p>Jasper Johns has painted the American flag many times throughout his career. The concept stems from a dream the artist had in 1954, and has resulted in many different iterations of the icon in Johns&#8217; work.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/basquiat.jpg\" alt=\"American Flag in contemporary art: Jean-Michel Basquiat\" width=\"900\" height=\"601\" \/> &#8220;Untitled (Flag)&#8221; (1979) by Jean-Michel Basquiat, image courtesy of huffingtonpost.com<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Untitled (Flag)&#8221; by Jean-Michel Basquiat<\/h3>\n<p>According to the Smithsonian, Basquiat&#8217;s former roommate Alexis Adler has previously vocalised the artist&#8217;s affinity for the flag. &#8220;Jean-Michel Basquiat always saw the flag as American art,&#8221; stated Adler once.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41460\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/dread-scott.jpg\" alt=\"American Flag in contemporary art: Dread Scott\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" \/> &#8220;What is the Proper Way to Display a US Flag?&#8221; (1988) by Dread Scott, image courtesy of dreadscott.net<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;What is the Proper Way to Display a US Flag?&#8221; by Dread Scott<\/h3>\n<p>By placing the flag on the floor, Dread Scott forced America to question what the banner really stands for as well as why. Though it was originally created in 1991, current events in America prove that these questions still deserve recognition, as well as answers from the nation&#8217;s leaders.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41464\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/brian-kenny.jpg\" alt=\"American Flag in contemporary art:\" width=\"1242\" height=\"848\" \/> &#8220;Deconstructed Flag&#8221; (2012) by Brian Kenny, image courtesy of huffingtonpost.com<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Deconstructed Flag&#8221; by Brian Kenny<\/h3>\n<p>Part of a series of works by the artist Brian Kenny, &#8220;Deconstructed Flag&#8221; focuses specifically on what it means to be gay and neglected in America. In an interview with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/06\/20\/brian-kennys-hole_n_1612236.html\" target=\"_blank\">Huffington Post<\/a>, Kenny says: &#8220;I feel discontent with the current political and economic system that allows for so much corruption and social injustice. With the alternate title of &#8220;The Pequod&#8221;, this artwork gives metaphoric reference to the ship from Moby Dick.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41459\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/aa-bronson.jpg\" alt=\"American Flag in contemporary art: AA Bronson\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" \/> &#8220;White Flag&#8221; (2015) by AA Bronson, image courtesy of momus.ca<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;White Flag&#8221; by AA Bronson<\/h3>\n<p>Created after the Twin Tower attacks on September 11, the chalky coating on &#8220;White Flag&#8221; bears resemblance to the dust and debris that covered Manhattan after 9\/11.
