{"id":43196,"date":"2016-12-23T17:21:47","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T16:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/?p=43196"},"modified":"2016-12-23T17:21:47","modified_gmt":"2016-12-23T16:21:47","slug":"sex-uk-skate-brand-got-banned-instagram","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/article\/sex-uk-skate-brand-got-banned-instagram\/","title":{"rendered":"SEX: The UK Skate Brand that got Banned from Instagram"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43197\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Sex_Lookbook_1.jpg\" alt=\"Sex Look Book\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>We talk to skater-turned-fashion designer, Louis Slater on why his label SEX got banned from Instagram, and why he couldn&#8217;t give a fuck if fashion girls wear his clothes\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When ex-pro-skater Louis Slater brought his eery\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/louisslater\/\">oil paintings\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 depicting mangled bodies and exposed genitals \u2013 down from Sheffield to East London&#8217;s Wayward Gallery in the summer of 2010, it marked a moment in time when skaters were finally growing up (incidentally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/2016\/09\/01\/palace-aw16-90s\/\">Palast<\/a>\u00a0first launched around this time too).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/sex_lookbook5.jpg\" alt=\"Sex Lookbook\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nOver the next few years, the quiet skater-turned-artist opened Slugger, a cult skate shop in Sheffield with its own popular brand, and continued to make art, experimenting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BO192lvj-_0bjZbc0ngdVqB4uHfGMNUZ8qnMqI0\/?taken-by=sexskateboards\">illustrative doodles<\/a> on fashion magazines alongside the paint.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The logo captured the hearts of thirteen-year-old boys wanting to annoy their parents<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2015, Slater launched his second brand SEX, which melded his signature scrawls (Each deck features a hand-drawn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BFeLXWKjqHsZeIjXbdT0fq5Erz4zJUCjng6J5o0\/?taken-by=sexskateboards\">pattern by Slater)<\/a>; his obsession with the perverse, and imitable skate-brand knowledge.<br \/>\nThe tongue-in-cheek logo quickly captured the hearts of thirteen-year-old boys wanting to annoy their parents, and interestingly, an Instagram audience of girls keen to post pictures of themselves in the white cotton knickers emblazoned with the irreverent logo.<br \/>\nWhen Slater is asked how he feels about the Insta-babes adopting his clothes, he modestly answers, &#8220;I&#8217;m just grateful that someone is wearing something I have\u00a0created&#8221;, and then adds, &#8220;Thank you to anyone who has ever bought any SEX products&#8221;.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/sex_skateboards_lookbook2.jpg\" alt=\"Sex Lookbook\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I\u00a0don&#8217;t mind anyone wearing my clothes:\u00a0gay,\u00a0straight, black, white, fat, thin. And, I\u00a0don&#8217;t give a fuck whether you skate or not. SEX is for everyone.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Riding the wave of skate&#8217;s cross over into fashion, that has seen boarder&#8217;s favourite brands stocked in Dover Street Market, Vans on the Vetements runway and &#8220;skate styling tips&#8221; from Vogue.com \u2013 SEX went from strength-to-strength gathering over thirty thousand Instagram followers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;If an alien wants to come down and put a SEX tee on, then great&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Some skaters voiced their disdain for fashion&#8217;s adoption of their look, online magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/fashionista.com\/2016\/07\/fashion-appropriation-skater-culture\">Fashionista<\/a> went as far to publish a story entitled, &#8220;How skaters really feel about fashion&#8217;s appropriation of their culture&#8221;.<br \/>\nI mention this to Slater and he disagrees, saying, &#8220;I\u00a0don&#8217;t mind anyone wearing my clothes:\u00a0gay,\u00a0straight, black, white, fat, thin. And, I\u00a0don&#8217;t give a fuck whether you skate or not. There&#8217;s too much bullshit and control in this industry. SEX is for everyone. If an alien wants to come down and put a SEX tee on, then great&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;no-one is in control of anything, social media is a joke&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then, unexpectedly last week, Instagram&#8217;s obscenity filter deleted the entire SEX account. The incredulous fans found it amusing, and left comments on the new account ranging from &#8220;We still behind you&#8221; (sic) to &#8220;Killing it&#8221;.<br \/>\nSlater says that he wasn&#8217;t that bothered about the social media platform&#8217;s censorship, saying &#8220;it gave me confirmation that no-one is in control of anything, social media is a joke, and society&#8217;s views on what is acceptable is absolutely ridiculous&#8221;.<br \/>\nSLEEK are huge fans of the cheeky brand, and its refreshingly down-to-earth creator.
