Born in Senegal and raised in Kuwait, she left her home country aged 16 and spent a decade in Japan, where she received a PhD in intermedia art in 2010. Five years ago she relocated to Lebanon. Consequently she has developed a sharp eye for cultural nuances, and her work deals with shifting customs in the Gulf region, often taking a critical stance \u2013 an approach shaped by her upbringing. \u201cKuwait isn\u2019t as micro-managed as other Gulf countries,\u201d Al Qadiri says. \u201cSo that keeps things kind of loose, you have more freedom.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset videofit\"><iframe title=\"Rumors of Affluence (2012)\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/94942599?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u201cBeing funny allowed me to get away with a lot of things\u201d &#8211; Monira Al Qadiri<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Experimenting with gender roles is one of Al Qadiri\u2019s main themes. For instance in \u201cAbu Athiyya\u201d (\u201cFather of Pain\u201d) from 2013, she plays the role of a man singing the Iraqi lament \u201cMawwal\u201d. By performing the folk song the artist also comments on the disappearance of this kind of eulogy from the local culture. In the 2008 video \u201cWa Waila\u201d (\u201cOh Torment\u201d) she goes one step further by playing the male lead while having male dancers play female roles. Through her theatrical depiction of sorrow and lost love, she reflects on the fluidity of gender roles while posing as a low budget entertainer. Such gestures could seem contrived, but her subtle sense of humour lends it sophistication: \u201cI noticed that being funny allowed me to get away with a lot of things,\u201d she says. Moreover, Al Qadiri is equally fearless in addressing Islam. In 2014\u2019s \u201cMuhawwil\u201d (\u201cTransformer\u201d), she animated Kuwaiti Islamic figurative murals in a four-channel video installation. These murals highlight a shift in religious discourse within Gulf societies, which once only allowed for calligraphic depictions but now are giving into the power of pop culture and mass-production of images. \u201cI do fear for my life sometimes,\u201d she admits, \u201cbut so far nothing bad has happened.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset videofit\"><iframe title=\"WA WAILA (oh torment)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-wtDdFVjuSI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThrough her involvement with GCC, a multidisciplinary collective, she has also begun to reflect on the Gulf \u2019s relationship with late-capitalist consumer culture. In 2014 GCC collaborated with electronic musician Fatima Al Qadiri as part of the group show \u201cHere and Elsewhere\u201d in NYC\u2019s New Museum, where they transformed the fa\u00e7ade and lobby with 4K video installations exploring the influence of technology and geopolitics on the province\u2019s future.<br \/>\nIndeed, her current prospects are shaping up nicely, too. This summer she will unveil another exhibition at Beirut\u2019s Sursock Museum, and she\u2019s currently preparing for a show at Art Dubai in spring while in residency at the Rijksakademie in the Netherlands.
