The director of Berlin cultural centre SAVVY Contemporary, he was recently appointed curator at large for 2017\u2019s documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel, and tonight he\u2019s preparing for an opening at his second exhibition space in the German capital, Galerie Wedding. On top of this, the 39-year-old curator from Cameroon also has another career as a biotechnologist \u2013 a field in which he gained a PhD after moving to Berlin in 1997.<br \/>\nDespite his responsibilities, Ndikung isn\u2019t fazed. In fact, this evening he\u2019s dapper and composed, if tight-lipped about next year\u2019s festival. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to go beyond the concept of \u2018Europe\u2019 and see what is happening elsewhere,\u201d he says. \u201cBut I won\u2019t be going too far from what I\u2019ve been doing at Savvy for the past 6 years.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ndikung is critiquing Berlin\u2019s much-vaunted internationality<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43507\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ndikung_2.jpg\" alt=\"Jean-Pierre Bekolo &quot;Le Film de la Vie (Life Cycle)&quot;, 2016. Image by Elsa Westreicher<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen we talk about colonial power, the mechanisms that were put in place during the onset of the colonial enterprise are still the same today, they just take different forms \u2013 such as gender, economics, politics and race\u201d &#8211; Ndikung<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As its website notes, Savvy was founded \u201cas a stage whereby \u2018Western art\u2019 and \u2018non-Western art\u2019 can communicate and exchange on a par with one another\u201d. It does so by exhibiting work by artists from Africa, South America, Asia and Australia face-to-face with those from European and North America. In doing so, Ndikung critiquing Berlin\u2019s much-vaunted internationality, and how non-Western art is still presented mainly as an exotic clich\u00e9.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen we talk about colonial power, the mechanisms that were put in place during the onset of the colonial enterprise are still the same today, they just take different forms \u2013 such as gender, economics, politics and race,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd they create structures for accumulating power, like museums. Although fat white men still basically run the world, art has the ability to subvert the sort of power that arranges museums and manages multinationals. In the hands of a filmmaker, for example, a Donald Trump rant could become a self-reflexive criticism of Islamophobia, or maybe even just a meditation on his terrible haircut. The possibilities are limitless, and thanks to spaces like Savvy and Galerie Wedding, open to a wider demographic.<br \/>\nHowever, while Ndikung is taking aim at the establishment, he\u2019s not really into bloody uprising. Instead, he\u2019s more attuned to the idea of aesthetic revolution touted by the German Romantic poet Heinrich Heine, who wanted people to transform the world by changing their perception of it rather than by killing each other. \u201cHeine spoke about Germany and poetry and art as a prism, and I\u2019m also interested in how the materials artists use change the way people perceive the \u2018refractions\u2019 in their works,\u201d he says. \u201cFor example, in Kader Attia\u2019s video \u201cOil and Sugar\u201d, a block of sugar cubes crumble as oil flows onto them.
