Image courtesy of artsy.net<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nWith\u00a0revolts against the British in Northern Ireland, student marches in Germany, Black Power movements at\u00a0the Summer Olympics and anti-Vietnam war protests around the globe, everyone had something to fight for\u00a0in 1968. Japan was no exception, and\u00a0its citizens were vocal in demonstrating\u00a0their outrage over\u00a0the nation&#8217;s\u00a0political and social restrictions, with\u00a0the anarcho-communist Zenkyoto Movement taking shape during this time. In the wake of such uprising came Tokyo\u2019s \u201cProvoke Magazine\u201d, an experimental, small-press magazine\u00a0that focused on anti-establishment photography as a platform for \u201cnew photographic expression\u201d. Featured in the second issue was Daido Moriyama, a creative whose gritty, out-of-focus black and white imagery starkly contrasted the well-composed photographs produced in the U.S as well as Europe.<br \/>\nSince then, Moriyama\u00a0has spent his entire career pioneering his signature\u00a0aesthetic \u2013 a style that provides a stark contrast against\u00a0traditional methods of photography. Citing influence from\u00a0the esteemed American photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/?s=William+Klein&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">William Klein<\/a>, the Japanese artist explores the darker side of urban life in his imagery. Rather than focusing on the\u00a0hustle and bustle of Paris or New York, as Klein tended towards, Moriyama has always preferred to concentrate on the banality of Tokyo&#8217;s lesser known\u00a0streets.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Irritated by the way photography was used as a tautology, Moriyama aimed for this book to bid farewell to the formal constraints of image-capturing<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44941\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Daido-Moriyama-Tokyo-Back-of-Boys-Head-1981-loeildelaphotographie.com1_-1.jpg\" alt=\"Memory of a Dog 2, 1982-2003. Image from pinterest.com<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Moriyama&#8217;s innovative way of constructing the mundane makes Japan look like the most appealing place in the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe\u00a0aptly titled photobook, \u201cBye Bye Photography, Dear\u201d, is considered the perfect example of Moriyama&#8217;s ability to blend his nonconformist technique with a raw\u00a0approach towards the day-to-day. Irritated by the way photography was used as a tautology, Moriyama aimed for this book to bid farewell to the formal constraints of image-capturing. Destroyed negatives were printed full-bleed, accompanied by scratches. The lack of composition and odd cropping complimented grain and over-saturation, constructing a perfect mess of organised chaos.<br \/>\nAlthough once making the claim, \u201cThere is nothing particularly fascinating about this place\u201d, Moriyama\u2019s depiction of his homeland begs to differ.
