\nTim Noble and Sue Webster<\/a> have seen the light. That much is evident from their latest works; lofty, stick figure-like sculptures that feel loose, liberated and \u2013 dare we say it \u2013 fun. In fact, it\u2019s as though the post-YBA duo has freed themselves\u00a0from the shackles of the foreboding shadow forms that made their name,\u00a0and adopted a playful, more fluid mindset. While they are no longer romantically involved, their creative practice remains symbiotic.
\nSLEEK joins them for a t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate ahead of their new exhibition\u00a0at Blain Southern London.
\n\"Tim<\/p>\n

Have your reasons for making art changed over the years?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\nSue Webster<\/strong> You don\u2019t choose to make art. It chooses you. You do it because you have to. When Tim and I started out, there was no “I want to become an artist”, because it wasn\u2019t a career choice then. The only icons we had were in the music business. It was unimaginable that you would consider this to be a lifestyle.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

You weren\u2019t directly part of the original YBA movement, but you\u2019re so often associated with it. Why?<\/h2>\n

Tim Noble<\/strong> Because it was a\u00a0necessity. We needed to be part\u00a0of it, get verbalised, be a contender. There was no other way. We had to find a place to do a show, invite people round, receive loads of criticism and get beaten up. It\u00a0was an explosive time.
\nSW<\/strong> It was one massive party, with lots of fights. Now everyone\u2019s made loads of money. The good ones are still around. Time is a good test, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

Your latest work is a significant departure from your trademark light and dark sculptures…<\/h2>\n

SW<\/strong> I was messing around with\u00a0this tiny maquette that Tim\u00a0had made from electrical\u00a0wire while we were doing a residency in St. Bart\u2019s 10\u00a0years ago. It was a self-portrait of us. Suddenly, I wondered what it\u00a0would look like blown-up\u00a0three metres high.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n
\nTN<\/strong> Something started to resonate. Those pieces had been thrown away and squashed. Hundreds of people had probably walked past them in that studio.\n<\/div>\n
\nSW<\/strong> I told Tim that I really believed in the idea and thought the world would be a better place with these sculptures in it. I think the art world needs them right now.
\n\"Sue<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a fluidity and volatility to the works that, given their\u00a0three-metre tall stature, is quite an achievement…<\/h2>\n

SW<\/strong> The original maquettes are hand- made, so we were effectively drawing with the wire. It\u2019s got all of that spontaneity. Even though we scaled them up in bronze, they\u2019ve still got that freshness.
\nTN<\/strong> That\u2019s the essence of it. To have that raw, handmade, human feel. Fabrication and production can re- ally kill things. These stick figures are naked; they\u2019re having a laugh.<\/p>\n

What did you find most challenging or surprising about the works?<\/h2>\n

SW<\/strong> They started off in neon, but during production we had problems. So we tried them in bronze instead, and suddenly it started to work. It started off quite pop and ended up feeling traditional. We used the lost wax process \u2013 an ancient method of casting \u2013 you make the sculpture in wax, it gets wrapped in a shell and then the wax gets replaced by molten metal.
\nTN:\u00a0<\/strong>We got a structural engineer to\u00a0help us figure out how to make them massive, without endangering anyone. We pushed it as far as we could. At first I thought they were really odd, then they took on their own identities.<\/p>\n

Did this time of political upheaval act as a creative catalyst?<\/h2>\n

TN<\/strong> Not directly, but I feel as though artists have always thrived in adversity, so I think it\u2019s an interesting time in that respect. It might really sharpen and shake up the art world.
\nSW<\/strong> That\u2019s why the UK has always produced such fantastic creative people, because we\u2019ve always had the royal family \u2013 something to kick against.<\/p>\n

A new punk movement, perhaps?<\/h2>\n

TN<\/strong> Obviously punk only exists during a certain time. But, maybe that\u2019s now. Maybe you and I are part of it. Maybe it\u2019s getting pent up and\u00a0ready to explode!
