question of what is and isn&#8217;t acceptable in art came to a head recently with the recent controversy at the Whitney Biennial. Coming at a politically divisive time, Dana Shultz&#8217; &#8220;Open Casket&#8221;<em>\u00a0<\/em>was a particularly tone-deaf and controversial portrayal of racial brutality that did not go over at all well with the Black artistic community. In the process, it has opened up a dialogue about which works of art should be permitted and who has the right to other people&#8217;s suffering.<\/p>\n<p>Yet a painting as controversial\u00a0as &#8220;Open Casket&#8221; does not exist in a vacuum. Artists have been constantly pushing people&#8217;s buttons when it comes to creating works of artistic value.
