\nWhether you’re following her or not,\u00a0chances are that Gab Bois<\/a> has already popped up on your Instagram feed once or twice before. At over 23,000 followers and counting, the visual artist has become a frequent feature on some of the ‘gram’s most popular curated accounts, including\u00a0@watts.on<\/a>\u00a0und @twbloves<\/a>\u00a0to name a few. With a catalog\u00a0of work comprising\u00a0macro close-ups of the human body, the Montreal-based photographer creates subtle-yet-fantastical images that toy with our perceptions of reality.\u00a0Equal parts humorous and grotesque, Bois’ work begs\u00a0viewers to take a minute and\u00a0reflect on the quirkier details of everyday life.<\/p>\n

“I prefer to be my own model. That way, if it doesn\u2019t work or I\u2019m disappointed with the result, I can only blame myself” \u2013 Gab Bois<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Citing her father\u00a0as a major influence on the decision to become an artist,\u00a0Bois recalls a childhood spent watching him\u00a0express his creativity around the house. “Growing up, my dad was always drawing and painting. I think he played a huge role in my general interest of art.” Bois spent two years in art school and, upon\u00a0realising\u00a0that the traditional route wasn’t for her, opted\u00a0to follow\u00a0her dreams on her own terms.\u00a0“I wanted to pursue my art in a less structured environment, where I could be my own boss.”

\nToday, Bois’ creative process is not unlike that of her father’s, with the artist preferring to work from home just like dad used to. As the warmer months arrive, however, she\u00a0daydreams about\u00a0expanding her work to include more outdoor shoots. “I plan to travel a bit this summer and I’m hoping that I find time to include some creative work, too.”\u00a0Until then,\u00a0she’s more than content\u00a0snapping away on a\u00a0point-and-shoot camera from\u00a0her bedroom while “Deep Cuts” by the Knife plays on repeat.<\/p>\n

“I always have a ton of projects in mind. So if everything goes well, you can expect to see a lot more of me in the future” \u2013 Gab Bois<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“I find it a lot easier to work by myself because there’s no pressure. Sometimes it can be hard to communicate my ideas to other people.”\u00a0Most of Bois’ images are self-portraits, save for the occasional helping hand from her supportive circle of friends. “I prefer to be my own model. That way, if it doesn\u2019t work or I\u2019m disappointed with the result, I can only blame myself.” By\u00a0positioning herself at the forefront of each image, Bois does a lot more than just accept full accountability for the success of her work. Once self-conscious about her\u00a0boyish figure, the photographer has since grown to appreciate her androgynous features. “I have never been more comfortable in my body. I love atypical bodies and body parts, and I think this body fluidity that I’ve developed over the past few years shows in my work.”

\nWhen searching for inspiration, Bois admits that she never has to look too far before the creativity starts to flow. “I find everything to be a source of inspiration \u2013 or distraction. Whatever you want to call it.” She\u00a0is quick to vocalise\u00a0her respect and admiration towards fellow female artists\u00a0including @artbabygirl<\/a> und @aleia<\/a>, while also finding a sense of community among creatives with similar styles to hers, such as @meatwreck<\/a> und @phebeschmick<\/a>.
\nLooking towards the future, Bois shows no sign of\u00a0slowing down. The artist has a multitude of projects currently in the works, and hopes to host a solo show by the end of the summer. “I always have a ton of projects in mind. So if everything goes well, you can expect to see a lot more of me in the future.”
