Tief in der Nacht sind ged\u00e4mpftes H\u00e4mmern und Pochen in der ganzen Stadt zu h\u00f6ren, deren Bewohner im Mondlicht illegal in den Ausgrabungsst\u00e4tten graben, auf der Suche nach arch\u00e4ologischen Funden. Ausschlie\u00dflich von finanziellen N\u00f6ten getrieben und oft ohne gro\u00dfes Wissen \u00fcber das alte \u00c4gypten und die Pharaonen, werden Zauberer h\u00e4ufig zu Rate gezogen, um vorherzusagen, wo wertvolle Funde zu erwarten sind. Der Film wird von Kindern gespielt, die, den Omen eines Propheten folgend, ein Loch im Boden entdecken, an dem sie zu graben beginnen. Shawky verwebt die Geschichte der Stadt mit einer Kurzgeschichte des Autors Mohamed Mustagab aus dem 20. Jahrhundert; einer surrealen Erz\u00e4hlung \u00fcber einen heiligen Mann auf seinem Sterbebett, dessen letzte Worte von den Stadtbewohnern mit Spannung erwartet werden.<\/p>\n<p>Shawkys poetische Videoarbeiten basieren auf historischen Ereignissen, die oft aus der Perspektive einer arabischen Stimme erz\u00e4hlt und mit Kinderdarstellern, digitaler Animation und Marionetten inszeniert werden. Seine epische Trilogie \u201eCabaret Crusades\u201c (hier teilweise zu sehen sowie auf der dOCUMENTA 13) stellt die Belagerung Jerusalems im Jahr 1099 und die darauf folgenden Machtverschiebungen in der Region nach. Shawky verwebt in seinen Darstellungen Mythen, Fakten und Fiktion und nutzt dabei aufwendige Musik, Texte, Kost\u00fcme und Tonpuppen \u2013 allesamt vom K\u00fcnstler handgefertigt und im zweiten Stock des KW zu sehen \u2013, um festgefahrene Geschichtsauffassungen zu hinterfragen und Glaubenssysteme aufzudecken, die im Zentrum der zeitgen\u00f6ssischen Geschichtsschreibung stehen.
