This fascination carried through Amy Arbus\u2019 Village Voice column in the eighties and nineties, through Vice\u2019s \u201cDos and Don\u2019ts\u201d, and into the modern, Instagrammable version we know today. But somewhere along the line, the ethos of street style changed.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57298\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57299\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57301\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\nStreet style was once the genuine product of snapping dapper bystanders in their natural environment. But commercialisation and the rise of social media has meant street style has had to evolve. These days, \u201cstreet style\u201d is a often a much more staged, polished affair, targeted towards elevating a brand \u2014 be that personal or commercial. The new street style undoubtedly has value (I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not the only one who\u2019s used Instagram to get dressed in the morning), but it also certainly lost some of its spontaneity and authenticity.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57303\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57304\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\nThis where Yu Fujiwara comes in. Taking to London\u2019s streets for SLEEK during London Fashion Week, his images offer some of the candour of the old with the style of the new. The everyday chaos of London\u2019s streets rules Fujiwara\u2019s images. The more obvious tropes of London Fashion Week Street Style are punctuated with policemen, onlookers, and earnest moments between the subjects. There are animal rights protesters (to which the colourful plethora of influencers seem to be oblivious). There are tired-looking bypassers with shopping bags and middle-aged ladies, smiling disconcertedly in the camera.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LFW_YuFujiwara_11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\nThis approach to street style seems particularly poignant this London Fashion Week. The fact there was an explosion on the tube at Parsons Green on the first day of LFW is evidence enough that fashion can no longer be separated from the current political climate. Whilst many of the key shows this season have been propagated nostalgic, escapist fantasies, the cities beyond the runways keep buzzing, keep churning, keep reminding us of all we\u2019ve suffered in the past 12 months. Fujiwara\u2019s images capture the blending and clashing of these worlds.
