Young people are often made to shoulder the blame for the death of love \u2014 but for every young aromantic, there&#8217;s an incurable romantic consumed by longing. Marcelo Gutierrez is the 23-year-old New York artist who makes short films about love and yearning for the contemporary lover. His coming-of-age movies are known for featuring young and fascinating personalities with elaborate costumes and makeup in decadently cosmopolitan settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/195995091\" width=\"889\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTender Roses for Tough Climates\u201d is his most recent short-film. Released earlier this year <\/span><span class=\"s3\">through Hello Mr. Magazine, the<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> roughly ten-minute featurette<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0was shot over the course of two years on both coasts of the US. \u201cIt\u2019s split into <\/span><span class=\"s1\">three parts, and it revolves around a set of individually fabricated characters whose focus is to elaborate on my vision of romance or the state of being a contemporary romantic,\u201d Marcelo explains. \u201cThis feeling directs the way I approach just about every aspect of my life, and it\u2019s allowed me to enter into opportunities that would have been statistically out my reach.\u201d Inspired by historic pop culture characters and personal stories, the film tells the stories of \u201ca Child, an aspiring Actress and a Goth\u201d in a narrative that\u2019s whimsical, oddly familiar and always dreamy. Marcelo\u2019s characters embody the ambivalence young people are surrounded by today. On the one hand, we all have dreams, but on the other, the pressures we face force us to compromise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/MG_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The tenderness and romanticism of Marcelo&#8217;s work find their roots in his family\u2019s life stories. Born <\/span><span class=\"s3\">in Bogota, Colombia, he fled the country as a child refugee with his family to later live between California and Florida. \u201cHome is a funny word \u2014 for me it\u2019s really wherever my family is living and wherever I am currently comfortably living,\u201d he says. Even his name tells a romantic story. \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s1\">My parents are both Colombian-born and moved together to Naples, Italy, to pursue their art studies. After living there for over seven years they adapted a lot of their customs and as a result named both their children after Italian cinema icons, mine deriving from Marcello Mastroianni.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Marcelo\u2019s life has folowed a similar fairy-tale like path. Last year he was cast in the <a href=\"https:\/\/i-d.vice.com\/en_au\/article\/8xnwav\/castmemarc-is-back-and-this-time-hes-looking-for-a-beauty-vlogger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#CASTMEMARC campaign<\/a>, which led to him being featured in the global Marc Jacobs campaign. And if you don\u2019t recognise his unique look, shaved head and angular facial features, you might have seen some of his work as a makeup artist for Milk. Recently he\u2019s done the makeup for stars including Tinashe, and a series of magazine covers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/MG_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">This year, he\u2019s already busying himself with another film, \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Hiraeth<i>\u201d,\u00a0<\/i>co-directed with LA-based artist Bailey Hikawa and shot by Pablo Tapia Pia<i>. <\/i>The short film takes place in a small room belonging to a character living in a small town.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">The character spends his free time writing letters from the Chateau Marmont, written by fictional authors and addressed to fictional recipients. \u201cTherefore he creates memories that never were,\u201d Marcelo explains. \u201cLonging for something that never was \u2014 only desired.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">And there\u2019s yet more up Marcelo Gutierrez\u2019 sleeve. \u201cI\u2019m slowly starting to write my first book,\u201d he reveals. \u201cI don\u2019t want to say too much but it will be a quarter-life memoir.
