\nOlivier Degorce is the most prolific club kid you\u2019ve probably never heard of. A regular fixture of the \u201890s Paris club circuit, the French photographer has been documenting the city\u2019s underground party scene since before you pulled your first party popper. His new photobook, Plastic Dreams<\/em>\u00a0brings back hazy fragments of epicurean nights, and allows those of us who spent our \u201890s parties eating Victoria sponge to live vicariously through his images.<\/span>
\nGrowing up in a\u00a0small French town near the Atlantic Coast, art was a welcome form of entertainment for Degorce<\/span>, but it wasn\u2019t until moving to the \u201cParisian Jungle\u201d in his teens that photography became a go-to means of expression. \u201cMy images from the \u201890s were a big scan of everything that was around me: details of my life, my friends, parties, situations, sex, food,\u201d he tells SLEEK. \u201cIt was like a kind of Instagram before the time.\u201d<\/span>

\nBut for Degorce, the rave always came first. \u201cFirst of all I was going out to party,\u201d he explains, \u201calways with a camera in hand.\u201d It\u2019s this first-hand immersion that makes Degorce\u2019s photographs so evocative, rather than voyeuristic \u2014 candid snapshots made to immortalise moments worth remembering. Lensing spontaneous portraits of uninhibited club kids, Degorce\u2019s vivid imagery resonates with the no-holds-barred escapism of the \u201890s party spirit. “<\/span>There was a air of utopianism, hedonism \u2014 a certain taste of freedom and carelessness that people still want to recreate today,” Degorce muses of the nostalgia they stir up.\u00a0<\/span>
\nDegorce’s photographic talent is also completely self-taught. \u201cI mostly took pictures on-the-fly,\u201d he remembers, \u201cwithout looking in the viewfinder, even when I was photographing a DJ.\u201d The results are intimate portraits that feature everyone from DJ Krush to Jeff Mills, taken with a level of proximity Degorce describes as essential to his work. And the images are personal both in content, and concept \u2014 \u00a0in a scene where such value is placed on anonymity, Degorce never contemplated their publication. \u201cThe parties were mostly in temporary places, and secret locations, and we were all anonymous,\u201d he explains.<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/span>
\nAfter raves were banned in France in the mid-\u201990s, parties moved to the club, and Degorce moved with them \u2014 bringing his camera along for the ride. He also began photographing for magazines, notably Coda<\/i>, Self Service<\/i>, Citizen K<\/i> und Crash<\/i>. \u201cThe shoots became more worked and intimate,\u201d he recalls, \u201cthey\u2019d be taken in a hotel room, in a record company or in the street in daylight.\u201d Plastic Dreams <\/i>brings together both these aspects of Degorce\u2019s work, with 440 photographs playing privy to the fabled raves of \u201890s Paris. And though the book\u2019s release seems in keeping with an unwavering resurgence of \u201890s gabber, house and techno rave culture, finding a publisher wasn\u2019t exactly easy. \u201cSome were interested, but they didn\u2019t know this medium, this music \u2014 it seemed out of place to work with a publisher who didn\u2019t understand what this revolutionary and innovative period had been.\u201d In the end, Degorce made contact with Pedro Winter, Daft Punk\u2019s former manager and founder of prolific house label, Ed Banger, who was embarking on a journey into publishing. The rest, as they say, is history. Across 540 pages, Plastic Dreams<\/i> combines hedonistic imagery with texts from different writers, historians, event organisers and journalists who lived, loved and partied through the \u201890s.<\/span>
