Comprised of singer Ari Up, guitarist Viv Albertine, drummer Palmolive and bassist Tessa Pollitt, the Slits, with their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mix of early punk aesthetics and the hybridised stylings of post-punk and new wave<em>,<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0profoundly confused the sex drives of their spectators. Their cut-and-paste looks rubbed together BDSM style bondage-wear with Girl Scout uniforms and ultra-femme Pierrot clown gear, resulting in assemblages of a brash contradictory nature.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albertine has famously said that men at the time \u201cdidn\u2019t know whether to fuck us or kill us.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their music similarly served to shake up punk convention, drawing on a diverse set of references \u2014 from\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavy bass reggae and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the kind of noise and free jazz associated with New York\u2019s no wave scene to iconic American vocalists like Dionne Warwick, and the frenzied atonality of early \u201cno future\u201d punk. The Slits kicked off their career as music writing virgins, the compositions they produced put together without even the slightest awareness for compositional convention. This made for a truly unique discordance that would come to define their sound.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At long last, this mythologised but somehow never really canonised outfit has been given a closeup, in f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ilmmaker William Badgley\u2019s documentary, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here to Be Heard: The Story of the Slits&#8221;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">currently midway through its US theatrical tour. The documentary tells the story of what it describes as the \u201cgodmothers of Punky Reggae,\u201d interlacing interviews with remaining band members with acidic interludes from punk academic, Vivian Goldman. Badgley and longtime friend Jennifer Shagawat, who served as the Slits&#8217; tour manager when they regrouped in the early 2000s, teamed up with Ari Up to explain what, at the time, felt like a totally un-excavated legacy. Up became aware around this period that she had cancer, giving a timeliness to the filming process, which Badgley describes as \u201chaphazard\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The heavy dose of Slits archival video footage and photography splicing through the film means that it\u2019s a documentary about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aesthetics <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as much as it is about a moment in music history. And, apparently, this footage was hard won. \u201cI mean no amount of DIY work ethic is going to pay major label music rights or license rare footage from the 1970s &#8230; We left a lot of blood on the sidewalk,&#8221; Badgley tells us.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result is a film essay about a certain <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outr\u00e9<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vibe and all of its way-out aesthetic trappings. Here, we\u2019ve rounded up the film\u2019s best fashion moments, culled from stills from the Slits&#8217; archive. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Greasy Mullets<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-65559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/mullet-e1526978465337.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"817\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Slits pioneered a singular mullet, reworking the controversial punk hairdo into a hybrid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greasy-biker-meets-dreadlocks-meets-prom-queen-shag. Often, they\u2019d mix it with a nice backcomb\u00a0<i class=\"Latn mention\">\u00e0 la<\/i>\u00a0New York Dolls, and would be good to go. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Really Oversized newsboy caps<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-65560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Really-Oversized-newsboy-caps.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1500\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newsboy cap at these proportions becomes a topper triangulated by leather daddy, Oliver Twist, and Brigitte Bardot. Here, Ari Up sits statuesque, a big-hatted silhouette against the bleak late 70s English skyline.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Mud on Top<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-65562\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/mud-on-top.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"963\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group&#8217;s 1970 LP &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cut&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sports a cover showing the bare-breasted band members standing in a Surrey rose garden, mud-encrusted ta-tas to the wind.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Shark Tooth Necklaces<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-65563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/shark-tooth-necklace-e1526978850482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"837\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8217;90s accessory often associated with frosted tips and light-up Sketchers has had several iterations. Originally, the shark tooth talisman became popular in mass culture in the &#8217;70s thanks to cult thriller, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaws&#8221;<i>. <\/i>T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oday, it evokes an aspirational surf-punk art-hoe look.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Sleeveless but also a collar and also a tie<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-65564\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/sleeveless-bowtie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1424\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Slits were visionaries in terms of shifting notions of gender, employing a distinctly performative and collage-like approach to their on-stage outfits. Often, there would be a sense of cut-up drag: in this example, a skintight, lycra, sleeveless, aerobics number is daintily mismatched with a prefab collar and tie duo. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Suit Jacket and Skirt Sets<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-65571\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/950x350-white-solid-color-background-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1045\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8220;women\u2019s suit&#8221; was one of the first post-corset moments that brought women\u2019s tailoring closer to men\u2019s sportswear in the &#8217;20s (thanks to Coco Chanel). Ari Up here is nodding to this collateral, in a look that might have been called\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">power dressing\u00a0at the time<\/span>\u00a0\u2014<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the fashion movement that rocked the &#8217;80s as corporate feminism began to push the concept of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dressing for success <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the fore<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Here to Be Heard: The Story of the Slits&#8221; is now showing in selected UK and US cinemas.
