\n\u201cOne of the things that drives me is just how pissed off I am at the way Justin gets treated on a daily basis,\u201d says British photographer Louis Quail. Justin is Quail\u2019s brother; now 58, he\u2019s suffered from schizophrenia for the majority of his life. \u201cJustin was diagnosed when he was 20, I was 12,\u201d Quail remembers, \u201cbut the writing was on the wall much earlier than that.\u201d <\/span>
\nQuail\u2019s latest project, <\/span>Big Brother \u2014 <\/span><\/i>now available in photobook form \u2014 is dedicated to Justin, \u201cwho I love very much\u201d. It\u2019s a refreshingly candid portrait of the photographer\u2019s brother, and a deeply honest insight into the reality of living with mental illness. \u00a0\u201cI think Justin has been ignored his entire life,\u201d Quail explains, \u201cI wanted to change that.\u201d<\/span>
\nThe intimate portraits that bestrew the pages of <\/span>Big Brother <\/span><\/i>show Justin\u2019s life for all its light and shade. They reveal the normality of his chaotic living conditions, and the unfavourable effects of his anti-psychotic medicine \u2014 in one photograph, Justin lies on his bed in a room littered with piles of unfolded clothes; in another, he relaxes on the sofa with Jackie, his girlfriend, his face obscured by cigarette haze, surrounded by dirty dishes and a table covered in mess. But they also show another side to Justin, one that\u2019s not defined by mental illness \u2014 his 20-year relationship with his girlfriend (a success by anyone\u2019s standards) and his unconditional love of birdwatching. \u00a0<\/span>
\nBut,\u00a0<\/span>Big Brother <\/span><\/i>is about more than just photographs. It verges on the literary, drawing on the narrative techniques adopted by authors. \u201cA lot of my friends are writers,\u201d he explains, \u201cand I\u2019ve been really influenced by the way they approach novel writing.\u201d It\u2019s a method that resonates throughout the book, which intersperses Quail\u2019s own view of Justin with Justin\u2019s police records and medical notes, as well as his poetry and paintings. \u201cHe\u2019s an amateur on both counts,\u201d Quail explains, \u201cbut his work is quite compelling and it\u2019s a glimpse inside his head that you can never access through a photograph.\u201d Publishing Justin\u2019s book of art within his own is not only Quail\u2019s way of ensuring a more rounded picture of his brother, but also a bona fide ode to him \u2014 one he endearingly describes as a \u201cliterary hug.\u201d<\/span>
\n\"\"
\nThe literary element of the book is supplemented by Quail\u2019s own writing: he accompanies each image with his written observations of Justin\u2019s situation. \u201cOne of the side effects of the anti-psychotic drugs that Justin takes to control his schizophrenia is severe drowsiness,\u201d reads one caption, attached to a photo of Justin asleep. These captions are a a narrative tool that serve to illuminate everything an image can\u2019t.<\/span>
\nIt\u2019s this reaching beneath the surface that gives Quail\u2019s project such depth. While Justin\u2019s mental illness might be instantly recognisable \u2014 \u201chis otherness is really out there,\u201d says Quail \u2014 his paranoid delusions are not. \u201cHe\u2019s worried about people breaking into his flat and stealing things,\u201d Quail explains, \u201cor he\u2019ll hear someone in the street say \u2018sorry,\u2019 and he\u2019ll think it\u2019s because it\u2019s the same people who punctured his tyre two years ago and they\u2019re apologising.\u201d It\u2019s through his medical notes that we\u2019re able to learn about the innermost thoughts and fears that plague Justin on a daily basis, shedding a light on the invisible side of his illness.<\/span>
\nJustin\u2019s also no stranger to trouble, and has had multiple run-ins with the police. Jackie, who suffers both from schizophrenia and alcoholism, has phoned 999 because Justin won\u2019t turn the TV over, Quail explains, or because she thinks he\u2019s hidden her keys. \u201cHe\u2019ll get arrested for criminal damage to a cigarette,\u201d the photographer sighs, \u201cbecause he\u2019s poured Jackie\u2019s vodka away over one.\u201d The inclusion of Justin\u2019s police records in the book not only divulges the ridiculousness of such situations, but is also a way of talking about wider systematic failure. \u201cIt pisses me off how clumsy our systems are at coping \u2014 how ineffective they are at dealing with people like Justin who just don\u2019t really know how to follow the rules of society.\u201d Quail\u2019s biggest fear is that Justin will one day end up in prison, without access to social support or the care he needs, and that\u2019s why his next mission is to get mental health charities on board with the book.<\/span>
\nBig Brother<\/span><\/i> is much more than the story of a schizophrenic, it\u2019s about Justin, and the system that fails him. Above anything, Quail\u2019s photographs present Justin as a person, who\u2019s not defined by his mental health. \u201cIt\u2019s part of him, not all of him,\u201d the image-maker continually re-asserts, \u201cand I think it\u2019s important to remember that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
