\nThe philosopher Francis Bacon famously said,\u00a0 \u201cThere is no exquisite beauty … without some strangeness in the proportion<\/span>\u201d. Maybe that explains the current fondness for the \u201cugly shoe\u201d then \u2014 arguably 2018\u2019s most extreme fashion trend to date. From Demna Gvasalia\u2019s platform Crocs of cartoonish dimensions at Balenciaga, to comical curled-toes at Loewe; from the plethora of exaggerated \u201cDad sneakers\u201d, including Louis Vuitton\u2019s wavy Archlights, to the old-school chunkiness of the Balenciaga Triple S, the \u201cugly shoe\u201d is well and truly having a moment.\u201cUgly is the opposite of a society saturated with images and ideals of perfection,\u201d says Rebel Royale, the anonymous London-based mastermind behind the Instagram account @crimesagainstshoemanity<\/a>\u00a0\u201cIt challenges our preconceived notions of what we have been lead to believe is beauty.\u201d<\/span>
\n@crimesagainstshoemanity is devoted to documenting your favourite worst nightmare footwear. It is a treasure trove of grotesque shoes, presenting an eye-watering compilation of the most aesthetically-challenged footwear one can find. Mined from the deepest, darkest corners of the internet and lately \u2014 given the new-found appreciation for gnarly footwear \u2014 straight off the runway, @crimesagainstshoemanity treads a fine line between attraction and repulsion. In fact, Royale started the account two years ago \u2014 after amassing a huge collection of ugly shoes\u00a0images and needing somewhere to put them \u201calmost to relieve myself\u201d \u2014 and soon found out, that \u201cthere are a lot of people that feel the same combination of intrigue and disgust\u201d as she does.<\/span>

\n\u201cIn the criminal justice system, shoe based offences are considered especially heinous. These are their stories,\u201d reads the Instagram\u2019s bio. Spanning classic perspex-platform \u201cstripper\u201d heels through ludicrous ice block slippers and nasty denim pool slides, not to mention a truly disturbing sneaker-mule hybrid, there\u2019s something for everyone with a predilection for the hideous here. \u00a0But, how does Rebel Royale curate her perfectly perverse catalogue \u2014 what\u2019s she looking for? \u201c<\/span>An immediate and guttural reaction. It’s the feeling of \u2018why, why did you do this? \u2026 To what end?\u2019\u201d However, she\u2019s appreciative too: \u201cI know the effort it takes to make shoes and to see that physical labour go into making something so grim, it really gets to me. But I also love it at the same time.\u201d\u00a0 As for her favourite exemplars of ugly excellence?\u00a0\u201cI always come back to the Margiela Tabi. They somehow manage to be classy and upsetting at the same time.\u201d<\/span>
\nThere\u2019s more to an “ugly shoe” though than its visceral effect. Royale maintains that the current \u201cugly shoe\u201d trend is an anti-fashion statement, carved out of viral culture and the necessity for manufacturing a stirring reaction online. She attributes the \u201cugly shoe\u2019s\u201d meteoric rise largely to Gvasalia, who she refers to as \u201ca known fashion disruptor\u201d. \u00a0Although a crazy statement shoe will make you the talk of the room, says Royale, it can also be a small act of rebellion in an increasingly conservative world. \u201cIt’s an odd time to be alive. You have people in political power with conservative values who want to pressure people into a beige, oppressed life \u2014 wearing something extreme is a small way of fighting back.\u201d We couldn’t agree more \u2014 which is why we’ve selected some of our favourite of Royale’s fugly finds for your #FollowFriday delight.<\/span>
