So it goes without saying that Pride parades, at least in the West, have radically distanced themselves from their political, anti-establishment beginnings. What started as riots in protest of police violence have since become displays of Pink Capitalism and homonormativity; complete with corporate floats and cishet pseudo-allies declaring \u2018love is love\u2019. Of course, Pride is about celebration \u2014 the clue is in the name, but it&#8217;s also about engaging with LGBT+ issues,\u00a0<em>every\u00a0<\/em>day of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Pride celebrations and Pride-related activities refuse to actively combat issues impacting upon LGBT+ rights \u2014<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether it be Trump\u2019s ban on trans soldiers or the fact that conversion therapy is still legal in most of Europe \u2014<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they not only betray the true spirit of Pride, but are ripe for exploitation for corporate gain. So how should we react when large retailers bring out Pride-themed collections? What do they actually do for those they claim to represent?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those of you who\u2019ve missed them, these fast fashion Pride collections generally consist of unisex slogan T-shirts and tote-bags, presumably designed to replace or supplement the official merchandise released by Pride organisers as a means of fund-raising. Evidently, there\u2019s a bit of an issue with this. As problematic as Pride can sometimes be, its importance to the community, especially those who have only recently \u2018come out\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or who are still closeted, really cannot be understated. Therefore, Pride-themed goods which don\u2019t actually generate funds for Pride organisers are misguided from their very conception \u2014<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly when regional celebrations,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fashionunited.uk\/news\/fashion\/primark-accused-of-pinkwashing-in-its-2018-pride-collection\/2018060129976\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like those in the UK\u2019s Burnley and Bradford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have been cancelled in recent years due to lack of funds.<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"images","gallery":false,"settings":{"fit_width":"6","caption":""}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the fact that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/fashion\/news\/hm-pride-collection-love-for-all-a3850961.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H&amp;M<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcrew.com\/si\/womens_feature\/LoveFirst.jsp?sidecar=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J. Crew<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/milled.com\/tommyhilfiger\/show-the-love-with-our-pride-capsule-B0w6NnPGJoBEer9D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tommy Hilfiger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have released Pride clothing lines is testament to the growing acceptance and visibility of LGBT+ individuals in society. It certainly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feels <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like progress: particularly when brands make an effort to secure LGBT+ celebrities as models. The H&amp;M Pride collection, for example, was released in collaboration with Attitude Magazine, alongside a star-studded advertising campaign, featuring former Ru Paul contestant Aja, and Gabrielle Richardson, the original Art Hoe. Moreover, when a percentage of proceeds from these collections go to LGBT+ charities, it almost feels ungrateful to take issue\u2026with &#8220;almost&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being the operative word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As open discrimination against the queer community decreases, particularly in the professional sphere, their purchasing power is on the rise. In fact, in 2015 it was estimated that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBT+ disposable income <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/louis-chesney\/lgbt-buying-power-closer-_b_11149254.html?guccounter=1\">was worth 917 billion dollars<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the US alone. That\u2019s not only a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of rainbow T-shirts, but a pretty clear indication as to why corporations are so interested in rolling out their own pride merch. It\u2019s obvious that big retailers\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intentions are a lot less altruistic and a whole lot more cash-hungry than they might want to make out; something made even clearer when they disregard basic LGBT+ rights in other areas of their business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pride collections from retailers like Primark \u2014 whose recent offering was manufactured in Turkey \u2014 have been made in countries whose track-record of LGBT+ rights abuses is hard to ignore. Even at the most superficial level, the banality of the slogans emblazoned on these T-shirts (&#8220;Love First&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at J.Crew, &#8220;Lover Not A Fighter&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at H&amp;M, &#8220;Love Is Love&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at Primark) contributes to the erasure of real-life struggles to procure fundamental rights and recognition for LGBT+ individuals, particularly trans, intersex and non-binary individuals, the world-over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"images","gallery":false,"settings":{"fit_width":"6","caption":""}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, is there a way of doing it right? We can\u2019t be under any illusions as to corporations\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intentions but, if anything, this empowers us to stop being universally grateful for the inclusion and to start demanding<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more from Pride collections. No Pride collection could ever be perfect, but if brands were to release ethically produced Pride collections, designed by LGBT+, particularly trans and non-binary, creatives, then they would be on a road to rapid improvement. The best offerings this year are those created by LGBT+ designers, which are, unsurprisingly, more political in tone. These include<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles Jeffrey&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.topman.com\/en\/tmuk\/category\/clothing-140502\/charles-jeffrey-7793121\/N-2eyeZ7yd?No=0&amp;Nrpp=20&amp;siteId=%252F12555\">LOVERBOY x Topman<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> collaboration \u2014<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a line of five T-shirts featuring artwork by LGBT+ artists commemorating the fundamental LGBT+ rights which have been won in the UK. Elsewhere, Alexander Wang\u2019s tongue-in-cheek &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/189804\/alexander-wang-talks-pride-inspired-capsule-collection-and-using-fashion-as-a-vehicle-for-change#.GBYK5dxuu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protect Your Wang<\/span><\/a>&#8221;\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collection with Trojan is encouraging (on-brand) safe-sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When all\u2019s said and done, corporate stunts like these shouldn\u2019t distract from the essential importance of Pride and celebrating how far queer rights have come in recent years \u2014<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly when Pride events further afield,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-44141603\">recently cancelled<\/a> Beirut Pride celebrations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, still come under so much negative state scrutiny. \u00a0Nor should the failings of these collections detract from the liberatory steps which fashion\u2019s creative directors are taking to make the industry more inclusive to the queer community, particularly non-binary and trans individuals \u2014<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether it be through the rise of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2017\/sep\/04\/joy-unisex-gender-neutral-clothing-john-lewis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unisex clothing lin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">es, or the crop of young designers, Charles Jeffrey among them, who are envisaging a fluid,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com.au\/fashion\/news\/is-the-future-of-fashion-gender-free\/news-story\/20305bd24d6482c5b49def388617806f\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender-free future<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst big corporations can offer a lot in terms of visibility, what they are selling is a depoliticised, overwhelmingly vanilla vision of the queer community. Removed from queer history and disengaged from the real-life political struggles of LGBT+ individuals, these capsule collections are nothing but smoke and mirrors. Not only do they divert funds from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actual<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pride celebrations, but they ask consumers to buy into the false message that LGBT+ individuals have already gained equality. While the queer community in the West enjoys more freedom than ever before, the battle is far from over.
