It was the first country to recognise same-sex unions, it offers unparalleled healthcare and education benefits, and tax rates high enough to make Theresa May tremble \u2014 but its stance on race politics and immigration is anything but utopian. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, when the Danish parliament approved a law to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/programmes\/insidestory\/2016\/01\/denmark-plan-curb-refugee-rights-justified-160122130312737.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drastically curb the rights of refugees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 allowing for the seizing of assets in a manner that frighteningly mirrored the Nazi\u2019s confiscation of Jewish property \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/picture\/2016\/jan\/26\/steve-bell-on-denmark-seizing-refugees-assets-cartoon\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> printed a Steve Bell caricature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depicting Prime Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen as a Nazi. In it, the Danish Carlsberg font and slogan labelled Denmark\u2019s Venstre party as \u201cprobably the stupidest political party in the world\u201d. The country\u2019s controversial &#8217;24-year-rule&#8217;, whereby any foreigner married to a Dane can\u2019t gain citizenship until both parties are 24, has also hit international headlines as a so-called abomination of human rights \u2014 because the government would rather <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanityinaction.org\/knowledgebase\/235-divorced-from-reality-the-true-impact-of-denmark-s-24-year-old-rule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deport mothers and their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DANISH <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">babies to war-torn countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, than grant Danish citizenship to a non-EU woman. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the latest in a string of Danish law enforcements that punish foreigners (and Danes who choose to marry foreigners) is, for want of a better phrase, the burqa ban. Although there are only around 200 Muslim women in Denmark who choose to dress in burqa or niqab \u2014 a miniscule <\/span><em><b>0.00003%<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Danish population, to put that in perspective \u2014 the law came into effect last week and a woman has already been charged. And while the government claim the new law is \u201cnot religious\u201d and that any form of \u201cface veiling\u201d or \u201cmasking\u201d will be subject to the same penalties, it\u2019s almost impossible not to interpret the ruling in the context of the anti-Islamic, anti-foreigner sentiment that\u2019s being felt across the Western world.<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"images","gallery":false,"settings":{"fit_width":"4","caption":"MUF10 show, courtesy of Copenhagen Fashion Week"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ban\u2019s implementation has sparked public outcry, from the peaceful, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/01\/world\/europe\/denmark-ban-muslim-veil.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavily-populated protests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the streets of N\u00f8rrebro, to \u2014 most recently \u2014 Iranian-born, Denmark-raised designer Reza Etamadi\u2019s subversive show at CPHFW this week, which saw models take to the runway in full burqa and niqab. The MUF10 show saw the streetwear brand\u2019s SS19 collection take a backseat \u2014 at least in the eyes of the global media \u2014 and foreground the fight for freedom, as people dressed as police officers handed flowers to women in burqas. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a pertinent message, and one that\u2019s surprisingly apt within a fashion context. While on a surface level CPHFW\u2019s innovative, avant-garde approach to fashion might seem world\u2019s apart from religious dress, at the same time, isn\u2019t fashion fundamentally about the clothes we wear and our right to choose them? And when that comes under threat, shouldn\u2019t the fashion <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognoscenti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and its doting fans, question that? The MUF10 designer thinks so. \u201cI have a duty to support all women\u2019s freedom of speech and freedom of thought,\u201d he said on Wednesday. \u201cNo man should be the judge of what a woman chooses to wear. Of course, fashion\u2019s new-found diversity complex is something that\u2019s come from the ground up, driven by the consumer first and foremost, and seeing big brands borrow from cooler up-and-comers, and inasmuch can be seen as\u00a0<\/span>disingenuous\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(think Maria Grazia Chiuri\u2019s poor-effort &#8220;I am a feminist&#8221; t-shirts.) But it\u2019s also a visible manifestation of general consensus, and it mirrors the change people want to see. In that sense, it seems there\u2019s no better place than the runway for bringing these issues to light. People take note of the things we wear, whether it&#8217;s the trivial fascination over Kate Middleton&#8217;s latest floral number, or the bold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.co.uk\/article\/when-hamnett-met-thatcher\">anti-pershing t-shirt designer Katharine Harmett wore<\/a>\u00a0when she met Margaret Thatcher. A move like Etamadi\u2019s takes the phrase &#8216;fashion statement&#8217; to the next level, and proves that, despite its common criticism, fashion can be anything but superficial. Fashion not only emboldens, but it communicates, and the designer\u2019s closing statement sums it up poetically and pertinently:\u00a0\u201cFree the officials from having to restrict women&#8217;s freedom to choose. Instead, offer a flower to the woman who is in most need of the scent of inclusion.
