If you\u2019ve got your eyes on the industry \u2014 and on Instagram \u2014 then chances are you\u2019re probably familiar with denim designer Ksenia Schnaider<\/a>. You may not know the Kiev-based brand by name, but if you\u2019ve pondered the peculiarity of the world\u2019s latest double-denim fad \u2014 shorts over jeans\/ “jorts”, call them what you will \u2014 you\u2019re already well acquainted. <\/span><\/p>\n

The look in question \u2014 as spied on Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa and Camila Cabello, and praised by <\/span>Vogue <\/span><\/i>\u2014 is actually called \u201cdemi-denim\u201d, and was pioneered by husband and wife dream team duo Anton and Ksenia Schnaider as a \u201crevolutionary\u201d take on jeans. Revolutionary or not, the mini jeans are <\/span>definitely<\/span><\/i> unorthodox and undeniably divisive, but love \u2018em or hate \u2018em, it looks like they\u2019re taking off. Who\u2019s behind Ksenia Schnaider?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The husband and wife duo consists of Anton, whose background is in graphic design, and fronts the brand\u2019s innovative digital concepts, and Ksenia, who\u2019s responsible for the fashion side of things \u2014 she’s designed since she was 19. While to some, working with a partner sounds like a recipe for disaster, the two say they get on well. \u201cWe rarely disagree, because we look at things in the same way,\u201d Schnaider tells SLEEK. \u201cWe understand each other very well.\u201d That, and they\u2019ve both taken on very different roles, sticking to what they do best. \u201cI am really bad with technology, so I won`t ever argue with Anton’s choice of a digital design.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What do they do?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Denim. Really well. \u201cMy obsession with denim started in childhood,\u201d Schnaider remembers, \u201cJeans had a cult status and were seen as extremely cool to wear.\u201d But, growing up, there was only one pair of jeans in the designer’s household, and they were shared between her parents. Where are they based?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Kiev, Ukraine. \u201cIn my opinion, Kiev is definitely the city to keep an eye on now\u201d Schnaider tells SLEEK. Rejecting the problematic Post-Soviet aesthetic that\u2019s been lapped up by the fashion circuit in Western Europe, Schnaider is among those spearheading the city\u2019s creative development. When we ask her to describe Kiev\u2019s fashion scene, she replies: \u201cGrowing. Improving. Very interesting and unstoppable”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why should you support them?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Two words: fashion conscience. Though Anton and Ksenia don\u2019t necessarily market themselves as an \u201ceco\u201d brand, they\u2019re always thinking about sustainability. \u201cThe fashion industry is one of the most harmful industries in the world,\u201d Schnaider insists. \u201cPeople consume far more clothing than they actually need, and up-cycling some of it is only one of the numerous ways to fight that.\u201d The brand have been advocating for a more environmental approach towards fashion production, one that\u2019s scarce, and therefore desperately needed, in Eastern Europe. “People,<\/span>\u00a0especially in the post-Soviet generation, won’t just buy something because it’s good for the planet. Why demi-denims?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The brand\u2019s staple item was a product of experimentation, a quest to revolutionise the classic jean. \u201cAt that time my friends were wearing different vintage banana-pants from flea markets,\u201d Schnaider remembers. \u201cThis gave me an idea to try to combine different pants in one cut. I went to the local vintage market, bought a bunch of old clothing and started experimenting and deconstructing them. I tried mixing jeans, Bermuda and Banana pants and even a skirt. It was truly a magical moment when I just felt that the cut was right and thus demi-denims were born.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
