Following on from her mammoth MoMa retrospective earlier this year\u00a0<\/span>(which is set to open in a more condensed form at the Hammer Museum<\/a> in LA in early October) and her recent win of the prestigious K\u00e4the Kollwitz Prize<\/a>, it seems right to say that American artist and philosopher Adrian Piper is enjoying a moment. As an artist who has dedicated her 50+ year career to disrupting societal apathy and inciting action through her performative, conceptual and minimalist works, Piper’s art is particularly relevant in an era increasingly defined by indifference and demagoguery. From her earliest works, such as the \u201860s LSD paintings \u2014 trippy amalgamations of shapes and figures made under the influence \u2014 through to her important and transformative performances in the early \u201870s \u2014 for example the <\/span>Catalysis<\/span><\/i> series which saw Piper wearing stinking clothes on the New York subway and wet paint, and\u00a0The Mythic Being<\/em>\u00a0where she assumed the disguise of a black man to question the stability of race and gender identities (Piper’s parents were of of mixed racial and African American heritage)\u00a0 \u2014 right up to her brandishing of the loaded phrase “Everything will be taken away” in her stirring\u00a0Everything<\/em> series (2003-13), Piper’s art has always sought to raise consciousness and shatter the passivity of daily life. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe power of art is unlimited for social change,\u201d Piper once said. This sentiment is the subject of her current exhibition at Berlin\u2019s Akademie der K\u00fcnste<\/a> in honour of winning the\u00a0K\u00e4the\u00a0<\/span>Kollwitz Prize. The exhibition, which is divided into three installations, demonstrates many of Piper\u2019s key artistic, philosophical and political ideas through a pared-down conceptual practice that insists upon the viewer’s compassion. Most significantly, the exhibition reveals how the now Berlin-based artist \u2014 Piper, originally from New York, has lived in the German capital since 2005 \u2014 employs a reduced aesthetic language to address timely issues on a personal and global scale. 1.\u00a0 Mauer<\/em><\/span> (2010)\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

On entering the exhibition space, visitors are confronted with a wall of blinking TV screens stacked in formations of five (there are 25 screens in total). The TVs bear a selection of randomly programmed images \u2014 static white and grey-flecked fuzz, American CBS test screens and real time footage of red roses. Without knowing what it represents, <\/span>Mauer<\/span><\/i> (which means \u201cwall\u201d in German<\/span>) immediately warrants your attention. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to Hervol, this work is closely connected to Piper\u2019s move to Berlin in 2005 and how she wanted to make art related to that experience. \u201cShe <\/span>installed her life in the (old) Eastern part of Germany, and started to inform herself about the GDR (German Democratic Republic of East Germany) \u2014 its formation and ideals based on communist and socialist ideas.\u201d Hervol believes that the \u201cvideo wall\u201d is about the \u201cdisruption of information between East and West Germany\u201d \u2014 \u201cWhat do you see if you are interrupted? You see the test image and this kind of technical problem\u201d. Where the CBS test image is a fragment of memory from Piper\u2019s life in New York, which is likely to symbolise a Western ideal, the roses are loaded with multiple meanings. \u201cFor sure, they symbolise love and beauty, but on the other side, the rose and red carnation are socialist and communist symbols,” Hervol points out. In this way <\/span>Mauer<\/span><\/i> \u2014 which exists at Pariser Platz where the Wall formerly ran through \u2014 boldly confronts the audience with a poetic representation of separation and divide, and what that means for the transmission of information. Significantly, Mauer<\/em> represents Piper\u2019s notable ability to infuse conceptual art with a personal angle \u2014 in this case her experience of fleeing to Germany. <\/span><\/p>\n

2. Hier<\/em><\/span>, (2018)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Where <\/span>Mauer<\/span><\/i> presents a breakdown of information, the second installation <\/span>Hier <\/span><\/i>presents<\/span> words in their clearest, slightest form. A blank white wall reads: \u201cICH WAR HIER\/ WIR WAREN HIER\/ WIR SIND HIER\u201d. The two other walls in the room repeat the phrase \u2014 which means \u201cI was here\/We were here\/ We are here\u201d \u2014 in Hebrew and Arabic. \u201cA<\/span>fter the monitors, this is a very silent space,\u201d insists Hervol. And she\u2019s right. There is a peacefulness to this work that feels at odds with the sort of energetic performances that Piper is known for. But despite the work\u2019s quiet and contemplative \u201cmemorial character\u201d, the installation is still a springboard for Piper\u2019s necessary inquiries. <\/span><\/p>\n

The words carved into the wall not only recall sombre memorial monuments, but are also inspired by the wall drawings of Piper’s lifelong friend, Sol LeWitt. Hervol says that the work is about \u201clanguage, time and space\u201d \u2014 the wall statements refer to the past and the future, why we are here. With regard to the use of the three different scripts \u2014 Arabic, Hebrew and Latin \u2014 Hervol believes that this is a meditation on religion and the conflicts that have arisen out of that. \u201cFor sure, if you have an installation with Hebrew, Arabic and Latin letters it has a lot to do with religion, and the fights around religion, which are not new but very old.\u201d Hervol regards Hier<\/em> to be a work of global significance, but with \u201ca lot of meaning inside\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hier<\/em> is an essential Piper work as it employs a nuanced visual language loaded with deep and far reaching meaning. As Hervol says, \u201cEven to choose daylight and the white walls means that attention is focused completely on the letters \u2014 this is a statement\u201d. 3. Das Ding-an-sich bin ich<\/em>, (2018)<\/span><\/h2>\n

The final work in the exhibition<\/span>\u00a0was made specifically for the site at Pariser Platz. It consists of 8 mirrored cubes in a tiled room; each cube has a sound recording of a person speaking in either Farsi, Arabic, Icelandic, Hebrew, Turkish, Gaelic, Hindi, or Somali. In its form, <\/span>Das Ding-an-sich bin ich<\/i> recalls famous minimalist works such as Robert Morris\u2019 <\/span>Mirrored Cubes <\/span><\/i>(1965)\u00a0<\/span>or LeWitt\u2019s <\/span>Variations on Different Types of Cubes <\/span><\/i>(1967)<\/span>, but like all of Piper\u2019s work, it pivots on matters of real human significance. <\/span><\/p>\n

First and foremost, it references Piper\u2019s philosophical studies (Piper gained a PhD in philosophy from Harvard in 1981) and Kant’s understanding of reality \u2014\u00a0<\/span>\u201dKant says that nobody can understand and see the real reality because everyone has their own reality,\u201d explains Hervol. Combined with the jarring cacophony of voices, the mirrored cubes compel the viewer to question their place and position in society, to even swap places with the voices that can barely be deciphered. There\u2019s no surer thing: <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Das Ding-an-sich bin ich <\/i>is a conceptual exercise in empathy, to put yourself in another person\u2019s shoes and to question the stability of your so-called \u201creality\u201d.<\/p>\n

For Herval, the work relates directly to our contemporary condition \u2014 \u201cWe have a lot of migrants, we have a lot of people leaving their homes, and arriving in places where they can\u2019t understand the language\u201d. Overall, this work demonstrates Piper\u2019s commitment to invigorating minimalist and conceptual art with a thoughtful sensitivity grounded in societal awareness. Without resorting to a didacticism, Piper\u2019s art compels the viewer to reflect with the intention to act. As Hervol says at the end of our conversation, \u201cAdrian Piper\u2019s art makes you think more deeply and intensively about your own life, and how you can be engaged with your own empathy, and with the movements we are in all over the world\u201d.
