Compared to its counterparts in Paris and Milan, London Fashion Week feels like the epicentre of\u00a0<\/span>young, cutting-edge design. Initiatives like NEWGEN<\/a> and Fashion East<\/a> nurture emerging talents, providing up and coming names with much needed support and mentoring as well as\u00a0 the space to explore a more subversive approach to fashion \u2014 the sort that LFW has become known for.\u00a0<\/span>This season\u2019s crop of NEWGEN and Fashion East talents presented some of the most exciting SS19 collections of the season with many of them drawing on their childhood roots \u2014 from Vietnam, China, India to Yorkshire and Devon \u2014 to create a colourful, binary-free vision of the future. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s our pick of the brightest stars from this season\u2019s Fashion East and NEWGEN recipients. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For SS19, designer A Sai Ta drew on his Vietnamese heritage by visiting the country his parents fled in 1979 \u2014 on account of the Vietnam War \u2014 for the first time.\u00a0<\/span>The trip inspired the former Yeezy and Saville Row designer to create something beautiful out of past conflict. The powerful <\/span>Napalm Girl<\/span><\/i> photograph by Nick Ut \u2014 and a quote by Kim Phuc, the girl in the photo: \u201cLove is more powerful than any weapon\u201d \u2014 formed the basis of<\/span>\u00a0the collection.\u00a0<\/span>Typically for ASAI<\/a> \u2014 a label known for delivering high-end luxury pieces in fast-food takeaway boxes \u2014 opposites were deliberately clashed to inspire reflection on both Western and Eastern aesthetics. \u00a0Military trench coats and bomber jackets were embroidered with symbols of transformation and change, such as butterflies and waves. Meanwhile, a colourful purse made out of nunchucks, symbolised Vietnam\u2019s new prosperity, where riveted bullet holes puncturing an oily black PVC jacket alluded to the country’s war-torn past.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Yorkshire-based designer showcased an explosive SS19 collection as\u00a0<\/span>a middle finger to 2018\u2019s depressing political climate. \u201cMy response is to bang a drum, hard, for the idea of totally being yourself.\u201d Inspired by a quote from his childhood hero, director Derek Jarman \u2014 \u201cI\u2019ve never believed in reality\u201d \u2014 Bovan<\/a> proposed his own kaleidoscopic alternative future with exaggerated silhouettes based on imaginary characters. The result: abstract art meets fashion.\u00a0<\/span>Hand-crocheted flowers were mixed with primitive screen-prints dried out in Bovan\u2019s garden during the summer heat wave. Plastic was warped and heat wrapped to create trippy effects, and colour was layered on colour, with jewellery designed by Plum Bovan. Meanwhile, fabrics \u2014 velour, hessian, jersey and knit \u2014 were combined and overloaded onto one another. And if all that wasn’t enough, in a collaboration with Coach, Bovan created bumbags three to four times the size of the brand\u2019s typical store range.<\/span><\/p>\n

Traditional Indian dress, skateboarding and punk goth make up the eclectic design DNA of Supriya Lele\u2019s latest collection. The West-Midlands raised designer employs her British-Asian heritage as a starting point for collections that weave Indian fabric into minimal athletic pieces, and transform traditional Madras check into neon. In her SS19 offering, a brightly embellished green sari burst out of a beige trench coat, alongside smart masculine tailoring, layered sorbet silk chiffon and deconstructed sari darting.\u00a0<\/span>Growing up, Lele was hyper-sensitive to her cultural difference.
