We live in an age fraught with facades \u2014 selfies, fake news and neurotic narcissism solidify society\u2019s surface as a superficial sham. On and offline, we\u2019re victims of a system that differentiates between our virtual and IRL personas, demanding conflicting things from each<\/span>.\u00a0 Now, a new Berlin exhibition,\u00a0<\/span>False Front<\/a>, <\/span><\/i>opening at\u00a0<\/span>GlogauAir Gallery tomorrow, grapples\u00a0 with this epidemic of superficiality<\/span>. Organised by 13 students from BTK Berlin<\/a>, False Front<\/em> combines the diverse practices of these emerging photographers to \u2014ironically \u2014 probe beneath its surface and make a case for its multiplicity. “We are illustrating what superficiality means within society through the lens of politics, mental health, and facades,” the group explain. “What can really be said about the surface of things? They enclose us. They represent us. Through them, we establish or connections and our growth.”<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a position that perfectly reflects the international perspectives of the artists involved, heralding from the north of Finland to the south of Asia.\u00a0 With 13 different interpretations of the world and its shallowness, and 13 different ‘bodies’, if you like, operating together in both harmony and in conflict, False Front<\/em>\u00a0presents a thought-provoking exploration into the timely subject of ‘surface’. In light of the exhibition’s opening, SLEEK spotlights six of our favourite False Front<\/em> photographers, who are doing more than just scratching the surface to uncover what’s underneath.<\/span><\/p>\n
