Courtesy ROSEGALLERY."}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parisphoto.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris Photo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is turning eroticism on its head this year with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parisphoto.com\/en\/fair\/About\/curiosa-sector\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiosa<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a new sector dedicated to sexually-charged photography \u2014 curated by Martha Kirszenbaum. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiosa <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aims to show a new side to erotic imagery, no mean feat in an era awash with explicit content, be it on the internet or shared and swapped via personal texts and sexts. Featuring a range of images across self-portraiture, photomontage and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>mise-en-sc\u00e8ne<\/em>, from archival to present day, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiosa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delves into the complexity of human sexuality, attempting to shed light on fetishism, fantasy and power dynamics. Polish photographer Natalia LL\u2019s <em>Consumer Art <\/em>(1974) shows, however, that there can be a dominant side to a pose normally thought of as submissive. While many \u201csexy\u201d photographs objectify women, somehow you get the idea that the pretzel stick should be the one filing for sexual harassment here. Communist Poland was not quite ready to see LL\u2019s take on sexuality in the &#8217;70s. Her installation, <em>Intimate Photography <\/em>(1968-71), featuring a wooden box structure adorned on the outside with self-portraits and with photographs of copulating couples (including the artist herself) on the inside, was shut down after just two days by Polish authorities. Instead, she aims to combat this imbalance by targeting \u201cthe deadly serious, male sexual arrogance\u201d by making her artwork \u201can obscene female joke&#8221;. Just take her work <em>Tendres<\/em><em>caresses<\/em>, which depicts two inflated, colourful condoms caressing one another, looking almost like cheeky cartoon characters rather than contraceptives. This approach is typical of Bertlman, who originally adopted crude comedy in contrast to the vitriol of the women\u2019s art movement in the 1970s. She is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/whats-on\/tate-modern\/exhibition\/ey-exhibition-world-goes-pop\/artist-interview\/renate-bertlmann\">quoted as saying:<\/a>\u00a0\u201c\u00a0I did not resolve my anxiety about male sexual violence by joining the call by militant feminists to \u2018cut off their balls\u2019. Although their virtual romance has been forced upon them, it has inspired their photographic work, resulting in obscured, glitched-out and blurred imagery such as\u00a0<em>Sexxx-2305<\/em>, which just about hints at something sexy and bodily underneath.
