\u201cI\u2019ve always been interested in the definition of elegance\u201d says 29-year-old Prisca Vera Franchetti. The Italian-born designer moved to New York aged 21, shortly after graduating from Barcelona\u2019s design school. Four years later, she launched her eponymous label Priscavera<\/a>, a brand that uses fashion to redefine classic European sophistication with a pop-culture twist. \u201cThe trashiest thing can be elegant when it\u2019s done in the right way,\u201d Franchetti insists. \u201cI like to play with that.\u201d With slinky flame-emblazoned slip dresses and wispy mesh tops in neon pink and green, Franchetti balances boldness with fragility to create soft yet striking fashion that leaves an impression on everyone who encounters it. \u201cI feel like my femininity is a less delicate one\u201d she explains, \u201cI aspire to dress women that are more badass than sweet.\u201d Considering Priscavera fans include the likes of Petra Collins, it seems Franchetti\u2019s dreams have quickly become a reality.<\/p>\n

When I visit her modest studio in Manhattan\u2019s Lower East Side, Franchetti quickly explains her outfit. \u201cI\u2019m a jeans and t-shirt girl usually,\u201d she admits, \u201cbut I also really love to dress up.\u201d It\u2019s reflected in the clothes she designs, which switch between refined casual and effortlessly elegant. \u201cI took the simple, sophisticated approach as a starting point,\u201d Franchetti explains, \u201cand then I played around with it, using different colours and fabrics that conjured up feelings from my past.\u201d Franchetti\u2019s designs are very personal and nostalgic, not that you\u2019d necessarily know it by looking at them. Considering how much she\u2019s already achieved, it\u2019s remarkable to think of Franchetti as a child of the Nineties. It\u2019s a courageous move for any designer to embark on their own brand so early on in their career, and the young designer is still surprised by her boldness. \u201cWhen I look back now, I think I had a lot of guts,\u201d she admits, \u201cbut at the time it didn\u2019t feel like that.\u201d After interning at Chloe\u0301 in between years of school, and working for Zac Posen in New York, Franchetti decided to cut loose \u2013 a decision that she says now seems completely rogue . \u201cI don\u2019t want to use the word \u2018care- less\u2019 because I wasn\u2019t careless… I was just like \u2018yeah, I\u2019m going to do this.\u2019\u201d And the risk paid off. Shortly after showing her first collection, Priscavera was picked up by stockist Maryam Nassir Zadeh and garnered international acclaim. \u201cI think the fact that it was so sincere is one of the reasons it picked up in the beginning,\u201d Franchetti supposes. \u201cIt translated into the clothes.<\/p>\n

Despite her natural flair for design, Franchetti struggles to pinpoint exactly where her love for fashion came from. \u201cI wasn\u2019t really into it when I was young,\u201d she admits. \u201cMy aunt had an atelier and I can remember being fascinated by the fabrics, but I don\u2019t think that\u2019s what triggered it.\u201d The designer describes her teenage style as experimental. \u201cI had a shaved head,\u201d she laughs.\u00a0\u201cI was a skinny kid and I looked kind of weird. But it\u2019s not just her designs Franchetti deserves credit for, it\u2019s her approach to business too. Franchetti is involved in every aspect of her brand \u2013 the online store, the legalities, the website, the shipping. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot,\u201d she says, \u201cbut the more you do it, the more you realise how much you can do.\u201d Of course, she\u2019s supported by her team (albeit a very tiny one) and often enlists the help of trusted friends, such as long-time friend and Priscavera\u2019s photographer, Francesco Nazardo. The bulk of Priscavera operation, however, is managed by Franchetti herself. And though business was never a made-to-fit role for the designer, she\u2019s adapted to it, and insists it\u2019s impacted her creative process in a positive way. \u201cIt used to be stressful to design, but now it\u2019s become more like a prize, the moment when I can step away from the excel and just be creative. It\u2019s like a reward.\u201d<\/p>\n

With her latest AW19 collection that, as ever sees the designer bringing fine Italian fabrics into a New York fashion context, Franchetti not only continues to solidify Priscavera\u2019s growing status, but plays into the adage of sticking to what you know.
