Brazil has seen brighter days. Since the killing of Marielle Franco<\/a>, an outspoken city councillor of colour in Rio de Janeiro last year, the country\u2019s minority groups have battled with rising threats from conservative and religious groups. Now with far-right President Jair Bolsonaro in power \u2014 an outspoken racist and homophobe \u2014 things could only get worse.\u00a0<\/span>His political victory at the end of last year triggered a wave of unrest across the country, largely led by leftist groups and activists. And the LGBTQI+ community, in particular, has made itself visible. From loud protests to street celebrations, the message is clear: we\u2019re here, we\u2019re queer. Clear it might be, but it’s\u00a0 far from simple in a country burdened by high levels of stigmatisation and violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brazilian photographer Felipe Avila<\/a> has spent the past year participating to the movement while documenting its diverse protagonists, providing poignant insights into the country\u2019s state of political turmoil. At times moving, at times shocking, the pictures depict the rise of a community that will not be erased. Your new book “Corpo<\/i> Presente”<\/i>, documents the street protests and celebrations led by Sao Paolo\u2019s queer community in response to the political shift in the run up and since the election of far-right President Bolsonora. When did you know this would become a series \u2014 what prompted your commitment to documenting this wave of resistance?<\/p>\n

In fact, the depression in Brazil started with the coup in<\/span>\u00a02016 that took Dilma Rousseff from her position, the first female elected as president in Brazil. And with the extreme right coming into power this year, through Bolsonaro’s “misgovernment,” the poor, women, blacks, and queers are being crushed at an unimagined speed. At the same time, a great revolution of sex, gender and race is happening in Brazil. In particular, I would like to highlight the art and politicisation of transgender people in Brazil, which is, in my view, the most beautiful thing that has emerged in recent times and that strengthens our struggle against the systems of control of our bodies and binary gender categorisation invented by mankind .<\/span><\/p>\n

The first photographs of this series were made at Carnival in 2017 \u2014 I photographed the people in the demonstrations against the increase of the bus fare in 2018. When I began to edit and put these photos together, I saw the contrast between those images of the naked people in the street during the carnival and the black blocks with their whole bodies covered in manifestations, and I thought that there was a great subject in the body as our main tool of struggle and resistance. So, I decided that this could become a series of bodies manifesting on the street in different ways. The manifestations and celebrations present in the book are intended to represent women, queer people, blacks, Indians, immigrants, the poor, all those who are oppressed by this macho racist state and by capitalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

This series is relatively different from previous works of yours, which are more invested in the domestic sphere, the intimate and the natural world. How do you see these topics speaking to one another, and how do you understand the dialogue between the political and the natural order?<\/p>\n

Images and procedure are constructed in different ways. But I think that the political issues that we are facing in Brazil and in the world go through this question of the body and our relationship with nature. We are understanding the fictions of capitalism and the structures of power are built upon denaturalisation and control over our bodies. Queer artists in Brazil are facing a great deal of adversity and censorship at the moment. Last year, the group exhibition “Queer Museum” was cancelled due to pressure from conservative groups, and weeks later, a performance deemed inappropriate led to the prosecution of choreographer Wagner Schwartz, alongside curators. Do you ever fear for your safety and that of your peers, as well as your subjects?<\/p>\n

This is very sad. But I believe that it is a passing period for a brief and more libertarian future that will come, the more we are censured and attacked, the more numerous new artists and proposals emerge. The conservative right is revolted to realise that its structure of exploration is being stripped. We will not go back to the closet, there is no ex-queer, ex-feminist … The future will soon come and will overturn these conservative ideals of the last century.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the publicity campaign of the crowdfunding of the book, I received internet attacks from the Bolsominars (Bolsonaro voters, who act like robots with their blind hate speech). But we do not have much time to fear. I see great courage in the artists and the people I saw and photographed on the street, and that inspires me to be braver every day. Of course, we are taking risks, but the fight is urgent. Unfortunately, Brazil is a very unequal country, and I am still part of a more privileged group because I am white and a man. Other artists and demonstrators are much more at risk than I am. Can you tell me about your methodology for this project \u2014 how did you organise your days, how did you decide what to photograph, how far in advance would you plan your shoots, and what kind of camera did you use? Has the tradition of photojournalism informed the work, and is there anyone in particular who has influenced you?<\/p>\n

I began by following the agenda of demonstrations and parties by the black, feminist and queer communities that would occur in S\u00e3o Paulo. I chose the demonstrations that I thought would yield more images, and during the last two years, I left the house almost everyday with the camera hanging around my neck. The images from the book were made with an Olympus Trip 35, which is a basic point-and-shoot camera but that gave me agility to take pictures on the street. I photographed everything on film \u2014 I really like the process of shooting with an analog camera without seeing the image at the moment it is being made. That way, I was able to delve deeper into what was happening around me and not into the image I was doing.<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe that the tradition of photojournalism has influenced me in my work \u2014 I have also read a lot of newspapers in my life and I love watching documentary films. At the same time,\u00a0 I wanted to make pictures that are not usually in the newspapers. I was influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson’s texts on the process and his way of seeing and photographing. What kind of relationship have you developed with the subjects in the series? Are you in regular contact with some of them, do you know where they are now?<\/p>\n

There were many people who I photographed in those years, and with whom I have diverse relationships. Some people I am regular contact with and always encounter at parties and on the streets. I just have a virtual contact with others, and I follow their work. The vast majority continue to struggle on the streets and use their body as a weapon to combat despotism. Some I have never seen and I have no contact, I would love to be able to meet them someday. To avoid this, throughout the process I have come to address all the people I photograph and jot down a contact to send the photograph afterwards to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

What do you hope to achieve with this book? How are the funds and \/ or any profits being used?<\/p>\n

This book is a way of documenting this struggle in very difficult times and somehow keeping these manifestations and these bodies alive beyond any repressive effort. In this way, we also hope to inspire and attract new bodies to this struggle.\u00a0<\/span>We do not make a profit, all the money raised through crowdfunding and the future sale of the books will be used to print more books and pay for the material used in the production.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your website features a quote from a song by Brazilian singer Belchior. What does it mean to you?<\/p>\n

Belchior is a great reference for me. This quote will not be in the book, but I wanted to put it on the site because he is a great popular philosopher and anarchist in my point of view, who has always advocated disobedience to power and control systems. The lyrics of “Like the Devil Likes”, written in 1976 (during the military dictatorship) are very current in the world political situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seu novo livro, o Corpo Presente, documenta os protestos de rua e as celebra\u00e7\u00f5es lideradas pela comunidade queer em S\u00e3o Paulo, em resposta \u00e0 mudan\u00e7a pol\u00edtica e desde a elei\u00e7\u00e3o do presidente de extrema-direita Bolsonaro. Quando voc\u00ea soube que isso se tornaria uma s\u00e9rie, o que motivou seu compromisso em documentar essa onda de resist\u00eancia?<\/p>\n

Na verdade a depress\u00e3o no Brasil come\u00e7ou desde o Golpe de 2016 que tirou Dilma Rousseff do seu cargo, a primeira presidenta mulher eleita no pa\u00eds. E com a chegada da extrema direita ao poder esse ano, atrav\u00e9s do \u201cdesgoverno\u201d Bolsonaro, os pobres, mulheres, negros e queers vem sendo esmagados numa velocidade inimaginada. Ao mesmo tempo est\u00e1 acontecendo uma grande revolu\u00e7\u00e3o de sexo, g\u00eanero e ra\u00e7a no Brasil. Em especial, gostaria de ressaltar a arte e a politiza\u00e7\u00e3o das pessoas transg\u00eanero no Brasil, na minha vis\u00e3o a coisa mais linda que surgiu nos \u00faltimos tempos e que fortalece nossa luta contra os sistemas de controle dos nossos corpos e categoriza\u00e7\u00e3o bin\u00e1ria de g\u00eanero inventada pelo homem. <\/span><\/p>\n

As primeiras fotografias dessa s\u00e9rie fiz no carnaval de 2017, depois fotografei as pessoas nas manifesta\u00e7\u00f5es contra o aumento da tarifa de \u00f4nibus em 2018. Quando comecei a editar e colocar essas fotos juntas, via o contraste entre aquelas imagens das pessoas nuas na rua durante o carnaval e os black blocs com o corpo todo coberto nas manifesta\u00e7\u00f5es e pensei que existia um grande assunto sendo colocado que era a quest\u00e3o do corpo como nossa principal ferramenta de luta e resist\u00eancia. Ent\u00e3o decidi que isso poderia se tornar uma s\u00e9rie de corpos se manifestando na rua de diferentes formas. As manifesta\u00e7\u00f5es e celebra\u00e7\u00f5es presentes em imagens no livro pretendem representar mulheres, queer, negros, \u00edndios, imigrantes, pobres, todos aqueles que s\u00e3o oprimidos por esse estado racista machista e pelo capitalismo.<\/span><\/p>\n

As obras s\u00e3o relativamente diferentes de suas obras anteriores, que s\u00e3o mais focadas na esfera dom\u00e9stica, no \u00edntimo e no mundo natural. Como voc\u00ea v\u00ea esses t\u00f3picos conversando entre si e como voc\u00ea entende o di\u00e1logo entre a ordem pol\u00edtica e a natural?<\/p>\n

As imagens e o procedimento s\u00e3o constru\u00eddas de formas diferentes. Mas eu penso que as quest\u00f5es pol\u00edticas que estamos enfrentando no Brasil e no mundo passam por essa quest\u00e3o do Corpo e da nossa rela\u00e7\u00e3o com a Natureza. Estamos entendendo as fic\u00e7\u00f5es do capitalismo e das estruturas de poder s\u00e3o constru\u00eddas em cima da desnaturaliza\u00e7\u00e3o e do controle sobre os nossos corpos. Por isso penso que precisamos retomar nosso corpo animalesco e ressignificar nossa rela\u00e7\u00e3o com a Natureza, nos inserindo dentro desse sistema que \u00e9 maior que n\u00f3s, ao inv\u00e9s de nos colocarmos acima dela e tentarmos a todo modo recriar uma outra Natureza.<\/span><\/p>\n

Artistas queer no Brasil est\u00e3o enfrentando muita adversidade e, \u00e0s vezes, censura no momento. No ano passado, a exposi\u00e7\u00e3o coletiva Queer Museum foi cancelada devido \u00e0 press\u00e3o de grupos conservadores, e semanas depois, uma performance considerada inadequada levou ao processo do core\u00f3grafo Wagner Schwartz, e dos curadores. Voc\u00ea teme pela sua seguran\u00e7a e a dos seus colegas, bem como das pessoas que voc\u00ea fotografa?<\/p>\n

Isso \u00e9 muito triste. Mas acredito que seja um per\u00edodo passageiro para um futuro breve e mais libert\u00e1rio que vir\u00e1, quanto mais nos censuram e nos agridem, v\u00e1rios novos artistas e propostas surgem. Essa onda repressora \u00e9 como se fosse o \u00faltimo grito do drag\u00e3o, a direita conservadora est\u00e1 revoltada ao perceber que sua estrutura de explora\u00e7\u00e3o est\u00e1 sendo desnudada. N\u00e3o voltaremos para o arm\u00e1rio, n\u00e3o existe ex-queer, ex-feminista\u2026 O futuro n\u00e3o tarda a chegar e vir\u00e1 atropelando esses ideais conservadores do s\u00e9culo passado.<\/span><\/p>\n

Durante a campanha de divulga\u00e7\u00e3o do crowdfunding do livro sofri ataques na internet dos Bolsominions (Eleitores do Bolsonaro que agem como robozinhos com seu discurso cego de \u00f3dio). Mas n\u00e3o temos muito tempo para temer, vejo uma coragem enorme nos artistas e nas pessoas que vi e fotografei na rua, e isso me inspira a ser mais corajoso a cada dia. Claro que estamos correndo riscos, mas a luta se faz urgente. Infelizmente o Brasil \u00e9 um pa\u00eds muito desigual, e eu ainda fa\u00e7o parte de uma parcela mais privilegiada s\u00f3 por ser branco e homem. Outros artistas e manifestantes correm muito mais risco do que eu, estar nessas manifesta\u00e7\u00f5es tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 uma forma de nos mantermos juntos e mais fortes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Voc\u00ea pode me contar sobre sua metodologia para este projeto – como voc\u00ea organizou seus dias, como voc\u00ea decidiu o que fotografar, com que anteced\u00eancia planejava suas sess\u00f5es, e que tipo de c\u00e2mera voc\u00ea usava? A tradi\u00e7\u00e3o do foto jornalismo influenciou o trabalho, e h\u00e1 algu\u00e9m em particular que influenciou voc\u00ea?<\/p>\n

Eu comecei a acompanhar a agenda de manifesta\u00e7\u00f5es e festas das comunidades negra, feminista e queer que iriam ocorrer nos pr\u00f3ximos dias em S\u00e3o Paulo. Escolhia as manifesta\u00e7\u00f5es que achava que iriam render mais imagens e durante esses dois \u00faltimos anos sa\u00ed de casa quase todos os dias com a c\u00e2mera pendurada no pesco\u00e7o. As imagens do livro foram feitas com uma Olympus Trip 35, que \u00e9 uma c\u00e2mera point and shoot b\u00e1sica mas que me dava agilidade para fazer as fotos na rua. Fotografei tudo em pel\u00edcula, gosto muito do processo de fotografar com c\u00e2mera anal\u00f3gica sem ver a imagem no momento que ela est\u00e1 sendo feita. Assim conseguia mergulhar mais profundamente no que estava ocorrendo ao meu redor e n\u00e3o na imagem que estava fazendo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Acredito que a tradi\u00e7\u00e3o do fotojornalismo me influenciou no trabalho sim e o enquadramento do cinema tamb\u00e9m, j\u00e1 li muito jornal na vida e adoro assistir filmes document\u00e1rio, ent\u00e3o acredito que essa linguagem j\u00e1 est\u00e1 dentro de mim e se encaixava nesse trabalho. Ao mesmo tempo, de alguma forma queria fazer imagens que n\u00e3o costumam estar nos jornais. Fui influenciado pelos textos do Henri Cartier-Bresson sobre o processo e modo de ver e fotografar. Al\u00e9m dele, diversos autores que li durante esses \u00faltimos anos me influenciaram no tema dos corpos pol\u00edticos: Paulo Freire, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, Eliane Brum, Yuval Noah Harari, Comit\u00ea Invis\u00edvel, Michel Foucault, Byung-Chul Han, Hakim Bey\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Que tipo de relacionamento voc\u00ea desenvolveu com as pessoas fotografadas nessa s\u00e9rie? Voc\u00ea est\u00e1 em contato frequente com alguns deles, voc\u00ea sabe onde eles est\u00e3o agora?<\/p>\n

Foram muitas pessoas fotografadas nesses anos, e s\u00e3o diversas rela\u00e7\u00f5es. Algumas pessoas eu tenho contato regularmente e sempre encontro nas festas e nas ruas. Outras eu s\u00f3 tenho um contato virtual e acompanho o trabalho deles. A grande maioria continua lutando nas ruas e explorando o corpo como uma arma de enfrentamento. Alguns eu nunca mais vi e n\u00e3o tenho contato, gostaria muito de poder encontr\u00e1-las um dia. Para evitar isso ao longo do processo eu passei a abordar todas as pessoas que fotografo e anotar um contato para enviar a fotografia depois para elas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Essa cita\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o estar\u00e1 no livro, mas quis colocar no site por que ele \u00e9 um grande fil\u00f3sofo popular e anarquista no meu ponto de vista, que sempre defendeu a desobedi\u00eancia ao poder e aos sistemas de controle.
