"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Way back in October 2012, art collective Random International installed their immersive artwork, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barbican.org.uk\/rain-room-random-international\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rain Room<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into The Curve at London\u2019s Barbican Centre. At the time, the ambitious installation\u2014an indoor rainfall that tracks visitors\u2019 movements through sensors\u2014was a breakthrough, accompanied with breathless tales of queuing for three hours for a few minutes in a darkened room, enveloped by the sound and sensation of falling raindrops. (On Monday, the installation, which has subsequently been exhibited at MoMA in New York and LACMA in Los Angeles,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2019\/aug\/13\/rain-room-offers-art-lovers-and-instagrammers-the-perfect-storm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was bought <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">otelier Louis Li for an undisclosed sum, and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will find a permanent home at a new <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hotel in Melbourne, Australia). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, the work offered a physical encounter and a wondrous visual spectacle at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rain Room<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> arrived at the Barbican, an equally significant exhibition had opened a mere twenty minutes walk away at Tate Modern, some months prior: a retrospective of the work of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/whats-on\/tate-modern\/exhibition\/yayoi-kusama\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yayoi Kusama<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For anyone present in and around this location at that time, the Kusama show was, for want a better word, mega. Although the Japanese artist had been making art since the late 1950s, revered by art world heavy weights such as Donald Judd and Joseph Cornell, the Tate retrospective arguably made her a household name, soon to be universally known and beloved. The show included a magnificent version of her now ubiquitous <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infinity Mirrored Rooms<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and with that, the gallery experience was changed forever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The side-by-side success of the Kusama show and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rain Room<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within months of each other was a turning point for the international art world. It would no longer be enough to present a picture on a wall, or play a video on screen, visitors wanted more: they wanted an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The pursuit and value attributed to \u201cexperiences\u201d as opposed to \u201cthings\u201d is often associated with the millennial generation\u2014a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/blog\/press\/press-releases\/eventbrite-research-millennials-fuel-the-experience-economy-amidst-political-uncertainty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted by online ticketing and event management platform, Eventbrite found that 3 out of 4 American millennials would rather buy an experience than something desirable. <\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"instagram","code":"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BzKXjdbBlan\/","settings":{"width":"10"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of art, however, what even constitutes an \u201cexperience\u201d in this sense? The magical element of Kusama\u2019s kaleidoscopic chambers\u2014a million tiny bulbs twinkling like fairy dust in a night sky\u2014create a sense of total immersion, of letting go, of standing and being apart of something that doesn\u2019t have to be explained, it is just seen, appreciated, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experienced<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is the happy fizz of pure, childlike wonder captured by the eye, and kept whole and sacred within. It does not stand-up to theorising and art history classes, and that\u2019s not a dismissal. It is, in fact, its greatest gift.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with great beauty comes great desire: in the case of Kusama\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infinity Mirrored Rooms<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and even the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rain Room<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, desire came in the form of a smartphone and the paradoxical urge to bottle the experience into a 2D image to share across the internet. It is no coincidence that the boom in experience-led art coincided with the worldwide explosion of Instagram\u2014in April 2012 the photo-sharing app, founded in 2010, was bought by Facebook, marking its global takeover. And\u2014as we are well aware\u2014Kusama\u2019s exhibitions are notable for their Instagram presence: over 800k images are accompanied by the hashtag of the artist\u2019s name on the app; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2012\/feb\/07\/yayoi-kusuma-tate-modern-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Guardian<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 million museum visitors have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flooded through gallery doors in the past five years to photograph themselves like mysterious spectres emerging out of the blinking glitter of her creations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The popularity of Kusama\u2019s work in the age of Instagram is unsurprising. As it has been well documented, Instagram promotes a certain type of aesthetic: contrasting colours\u2014the dreaminess of \u2018millennial pink\u2019 clashed with the ludicrous green of a halved avocado\u2014and of course, illusions, mirrors, sparkling colours and gleaming lights, in other words, everything encompassed by Kusama\u2019s cosmic installations. The realisation, however, that there is\u2014or at least <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2019\/04\/influencers-are-abandoning-instagram-look\/587803\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some believe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the age of the cookie-cutter \u201cInstagram aesthetic\u201d is over)\u2014a certain formula of aesthetic choices that work on Instagram ushered in a whole crop of artistic projects and pop-up museums, most notably the nauseatingly kitsch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumoficecream.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Museum of Ice Cream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which now has a permanent set-up in Los Angeles and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/museum-of-ice-cream-valued-at-200-million-11565782201\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly valued <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at $200 million. The same candy pinkness that is the Museum of Ice Cream\u2019s main selling point is the same reason why business is booming at London\u2019s spacey, Wes Anderson-esque restaurant, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sketchlondon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sketch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a padded pink palace of every Instragrammer\u2019s dreams. Although the restaurant opened in 2003, in the age of Instagram it has gained unprecedented allure on account of its whimsical, photographable interiors; in the case of the Museum of Ice Cream it is a space specifically engineered for sharable photo ops.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"instagram","code":"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BwubWYGgk5Z\/","settings":{"width":"10"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The zenith of all of this surely must be the news <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/exhibitions\/teamlab-museum-attendance-1618834\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week that Japanese art collective <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamlab.art\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teamLab\u2019s <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokyo museum is apparently the world\u2019s most popular single-artist destination, overtaking even the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. For those not familiar, you\u2019re likely to have seen the collective\u2019s work on, where else, but Instagram. TeamLab\u2014compiled of artists, programmers, engineers, mathematicians, animators and architects\u2014create large scale immersive installations composed of swirling cascades of colour and light. Although the collective\u2019s eye popping installations\u00a0 have been met with scepticism within the art world, they are beloved by punters\u2014in its first year alone the collective\u2019s museum, teamLab Borderless, attracted some 2.3 million visitors. While they have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/teamlab-industry-city-brooklyn-1623670\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stalled plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to open a museum in Brooklyn for the time being, their expansion and popularity shows no signs of slowing down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of teamLab\u2019s installations bear a striking resemblance to Kusama\u2019s. But the collective takes the ideas started by Kusama to new extremes: these rooms are not mirrored illusions, but actual dreamworlds you can walk around in. Here, the magical spectacle is rendered real in a dazzling experience that caters to Instagram feeds.
