For the autumn issue of SLEEK, covered by Martin Parr, and out now<\/a>,\u00a0we wanted to research the idea of walls \u2013 the impact of borders, real and imagined.\u00a0<\/span>As a no-deal Brexit seems increasingly likely, the UK is becoming an isolated entity and across the world, borders are being created both physically and culturally \u2014 from the US-Mexican border to Europe \u2014 walls from past to present are on our minds.<\/span><\/p>\n

In November, Germany will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the barrier that separated the city into East and West for 28 years.\u00a0<\/span>In The Fall of the Wall<\/em>, Sirin Kale<\/a> looks at how the end of the Cold War influenced club culture in the German capital, while in Photographing The Border with Griselda San Martin<\/em>, Ayesha A. Siddiqi<\/a> speaks to the photographer dedicated to depicting an alternative to the mainstream media lens on the US-Mexican border crisis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We also wanted to look at the cultural divisions from the past that are still active today.\u00a0 How have these barriers transformed national cultures? In our cover story,\u00a0Go (South) West, <\/em>we team up with Martin Parr once again (he shot our SLEEK 59 cover last year).<\/span>Stylist Eliza Conlon<\/a> travelled to Bristol, England, where Parr\u2019s photography foundation is located, to shoot the most captivating Autumn\/Winter 2019 looks on American model Maggie Maurer<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span>Parr\u2019s lens gives this season\u2019s stylings his classic British satirical edge. Meanwhile,\u00a0Back and\u00a0<\/em><\/span>Forth<\/em>, Andrew Nuding<\/a> and Kieran Kilgallon<\/a> took to the streets of London to shoot this season\u2019s women\u2019s and menswear with Nuding\u2019s trademark ethereal style.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elsewhere, SLEEK’s editor-in-chief Grace Banks interviewed the Libyan-American journalist and activist Noor Tagouri<\/a>. Tagouri’s new take on journalism, in which she challenges the fake news rhetoric, puts the pursuit of truth at the centre of every inquiry, from her documentary podcast Sold in America<\/em> to her upcoming investigative series In America With Noor<\/em>. \u201cInstead of fighting for certain stories to be covered and certain stories to be covered in a certain way,\u201d Tagouri says, \u201cwe\u2019re doing it ourselves.\u201d For this feature, photographer Mayan Toledano<\/a> shot Tagouri wearing a purple leather Sies Marjan<\/a> power suit.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her regular column, Chris Kraus<\/a>\u00a0discusses the public takedown of women writers in relation to Mary McCarthy; Turkish author, <\/span>Ayseg\u00fcl Savas<\/a>, pens a short story in Turkish and English, and\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0for this issue\u2019s cabinet, Francesca Allen<\/a> photographs\u00a0\u2018it\u2019 model Tin Gao<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, Billie JD Porter\u2019s essay on conspicuous consumption analyses the impact of social media from a new angle; examining the class divides created by influencer marketing, using research which explores how this creates a new class border: \u201cAt a time where the issue of poverty is so misunderstood and misrep- resented, we have a responsibility to make efforts to improve the state of the conversation,\u201d says Porter.
