This past week has possibly been the biggest yet in the Brexit debacle. From MPs voting to stop a No-Deal Brexit (a scenario in which the UK stumbles out of the EU with no pre-negotiated terms or agreements), to the proposition of <\/span>another<\/span><\/i> general election, the last seven days have felt less \u2018House of Commons\u2019 and more ‘House of Cards\u2019. And so, as we attempt to soothe the nagging feeling that Britain has irrevocably descended into chaos, we’ve called on the help of a few familiar oil-paintings dredged up from the dusty annals of Western art history to shed some light on the madness.<\/span><\/p>\n

The words \u2018Tory\u2019 and \u2018rebel\u2019 are not exactly synonymous, and yet as 21 Tory-Rebel MPs voted <\/span>against<\/span><\/i> Prime Minister Boris Johnson and <\/span>for <\/span><\/i>a bill to block a No-Deal brexit, this marriage of linguistics has never felt more appropriate. \u201821 Tory-Rebel MPs\u2019 sounds like an underground \u201870s punk band, or a much improved, more political, <\/span>Twenty-One Pilots <\/span><\/i>tribute band. Either way, to watch them play has been more thrilling than any Glastonbury. Long-serving conservative MPs, such as Ken Clarke and Nicholas Soames (the latter is none other than Winston Churchill\u2019s grandson\u2014Soames is so deeply and historically Tory that if you cut him open he would bleed blue) called out Johnson for his \u201cserial disloyalty<\/a>\u201d and voted against the party, along with 19 other Tory MPs. <\/span><\/p>\n

It was at this point that Brexit negotiations took an unprecedented turn. Johnson\u2019s bill lost 328 votes to 301 this Wednesday, potentially stopping a No-Deal Brexit and causing each of the dissenting Tory MPs to be expelled from the party. The dramatically consequential moment, profound and audacious in its magnitude, echoes the chaos of Rubens\u2019 violent masterpiece <\/span>Consequences of War<\/span><\/i>. Rubens\u2019 cinematic tableau may have been painted in the midst of the Thirty-Years\u2019 War in the 17th century, yet still has all the clamour and clatter of today\u2019s Westminster. The woman pictured to the left, throwing her arms skyward, was Rubens\u2019s artistic allegory of a despairing Europe\u2014horribly fitting. <\/span><\/p>\n

For a man so preoccupied with manners, the notoriously Victorian, Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg\u2019s now immortalised slouch showed an utter disregard for good posture. In a stance that embodies the essence of the current Tory leadership (read: petulant and laconic), the MP\u2019s aesthetic shifted from that of a Dickens’ villain to a Pre-Raphaelite-damsel, as he slumped into his parliamentary seat like a drowned Ophelia. Unlike Millais\u2019 subject, Rees-Mogg is no victim. Instead, the attention-seeking MP showed little other than cockiness and disregard as he repeatedly ignored requests from fellow MPs to \u201csit up straight<\/a>\u201d. Giggling, like a smug school-boy, Rees-Mogg\u2019s stance spawned what I hereby term \u2018Mogg-Spreading\u2019. Think man-spreading, but with increased measures of entitlement and a healthy dash of antiquity. Can\u2019t think his beloved nanny would be best-pleased.<\/span><\/p>\n

Boris Johnson\u2019s offer of a general election is like \u201cthe offer of a poisoned apple to Snow White from the wicked Queen,\u201d mused Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. \u201cWhat he\u2019s offering is not an apple, or even an election, but the poison of a No-Deal,\u201d Corbyn stated, in a metaphor that echoes Rene Magritte\u2019s ghostly <\/span>Son of Man. <\/span><\/i>The painting, which features a suitably Corbyn-esque red tie and the aforementioned fruit,<\/span> was said by Magritte to represent the conflict \u201c<\/span>between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present\u201d\u2014a suitable description given Johnson\u2019s \u201ctremendous skill for keeping a straight face whilst being so disingenuous\u201d (MP Ken Clarke\u2019s <\/span>words<\/span><\/a>, not ours).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
