How do I even begin<\/span> to explain Caroline Calloway<\/a>? In the past few years, the all-American-girl-turned-Cambridge-student Calloway garnered a sizeable Instagram following for her rambling captions and sugary documentation of an expat scholar\u2019s life. In the past few months, the influencer-turned-scammer Calloway watched that all steadily fall apart, as a <\/span>journalist<\/span><\/a> writing for Pajiba loudly picked apart the con-artistry behind her work. In the past week, Calloway became the subject of a viral expos\u00e9 on The Cut, titled \u201c<\/span>I Was Caroline Calloway<\/span><\/a>\u201d, written by her once-best-friend (and uncredited ghostwriter) Natalie Beach. And, in the past few days, the only-27-year-old Calloway announced the death of her father, prompting her to grieve, in real-time, on Instagram.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of all the terrible and extraordinary<\/span> things surrounding Calloway, Beach\u2019s searing \u201cI Was Caroline Calloway\u201d is the most fascinating. Cruelly exacted and neatly executed, its genre may fall under \u2018personal essay\u2019, but its style flits incredibly between \u2018thriller\u2019 and \u2018romance\u2019. The article does more than just expose Calloway as an artistic-fraud (according to Beach, she co-wrote Calloway\u2019s famous Instagram captions, and infamous book proposal without any recognition), it shows her as entitled, manipulative, unreliable, cocky, callous, charming, entrancing, talented\u2014the list goes on. After the publication of Beach\u2019s<\/span> piece,<\/span> Calloway became more than just a scammer, she was now, also, a terrible friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the past few days I\u2019ve found myself questioning the ethics of it all. A quick perusal of Caroline Calloway\u2019s IG reveals a woman who is\u00a0 clearly spiralling out of control. And yet here we all are, popcorn at the ready, manically refreshing <\/span>The Cut <\/span><\/i>to delight in her downfall. \u201cIt\u2019s pure schadenfreude,\u201d proclaimed English journalist Pandora Sykes of Calloway-gate on <\/span>Twitter<\/span><\/a>. \u201cEnjoying the takedown of a young narcissistic woman is a tale as old as time.\u201d Sykes is right that as a society we\u00a0 revel in watching the mighty topple, but Beach\u2019s essay plays into a much larger, more tangled, cultural phenomenon than simple schadenfreude\u2014the notoriously complicated dynamics of female friendship.<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"instagram","code":"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B2PyFQ4BLAv\/","settings":{"width":"10"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"

Historically, society has taken an unpleasant fascination in watching female-friendships unravel: we publicise <\/span>Sex and the City <\/span><\/i><\/a>feuds and we make films like <\/span>Bride Wars<\/span><\/i>. It is for this reason that the easy and lazy misreading of Beach\u2019s article is to pit her and Calloway against one another. <\/span>A <\/span>recent interview<\/span><\/a> in <\/span>The Times <\/span><\/i>was clumsily titled, \u201cCaroline Calloway: How my best friend made me an internet pariah\u201d\u2014a brash attempt to market Calloway and Beach as sworn-enemies. \u201c<\/span>Jesus f*cking Christ. I don\u2019t agree with this headline AT ALL,\u201d<\/span> moaned Calloway on her <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a>, reminding onlookers that the relationship extended far beyond simple rivalry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, the very notion of Beach\u2019s tell-all expos\u00e9 was vindictive, but beneath her efforts to out Calloway, the writing bubbles with an undercurrent of sisterly longing and loss. Shaming Caroline Calloway may have been the essay\u2019s result, but it does not feel like its intention. And no matter how closely Beach\u2019s depiction of Calloway drifts into malice, there is a persistent sense of tenderness and care in her presentation. Similarly, Calloway\u2019s response to the article has been to praise and publicise Beach. \u201c<\/span>WHO IS GIVING NATALIE A BOOK DEAL?\u201d she questioned on her <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a>, \u201cShe deserves these jobs because she\u2019s the best writer I know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"instagram","code":"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B2UWseWhffQ\/","settings":{"width":"10"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"

At its core, \u201cI Was Caroline Calloway\u201d is a distillation of the complexities of female friendship\u2014a subject we have culturally marvelled at for decades. Unsurprisingly, comparisons between Beach\u2019s work and previous famous-accounts of female friendship arrived thick and fast. \u201cReading <\/span>[\u201cI Was Caroline Calloway\u201d] was like boiling six<\/span> seasons of HBO\u2019s <\/span>Girls<\/span><\/i> into a teaspoon, and injecting it into your veins,\u201d <\/span>wrote<\/span><\/a> Washington Post<\/span><\/i> columnist Monica Hesse. \u201c<\/span>If nothing else, this piece is really great Elena Ferrante fan fic,\u201d <\/span>tweeted<\/span><\/a> The Cut<\/span><\/i>\u2019s<\/span> senior editor Anna Silman. For me, the whole article smacks of Sally Rooney\u2019s mesmerisingly messy female-friendship-driven novel, <\/span>Conversations With Friends<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like Ferrante\u2019s <\/span>My Brilliant Friend, <\/span><\/i>Dunham\u2019s <\/span>Girls<\/span><\/i>, and Rooney\u2019s <\/span>Conversations With Friends,<\/span><\/i> Beach\u2019s essay basks in ambivalence: tiresome black and white presentations of female bitchiness are swapped out for far murkier, more challenging, and authentic depictions of women. There are no heroes in these stories, and no villains either. Where Calloway is portrayed as manipulative and chaotic, Beach is equally calculating and self-pitying. When I take <\/span>BuzzFeed<\/span><\/i>\u2019s \u201cAre you a Caroline or a Natalie\u201d<\/span> quiz<\/span><\/a>, I am told I am a Caroline, and I am unsure whether I should feel happy or sad at the diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By the time I finished \u201cI Was Caroline Calloway\u201d, I was a little exhausted. Beach\u2019s essay makes for riveting and confronting reading, forcing its consumer to identify the uglier aspects of themselves. I might not have gone so far as to lock someone out on a cold Amsterdam street (as Calloway did to Beach) but I have let friends down, and, in turn, been let down by friends. And, like Calloway and Beach, the ramifications of these transgressions<\/span> are rarely clear-cut. Female friendships are some of the most steadfast and loving relationships we know, while at the same time being some of the most puzzling and nuanced.
