When the Sunday Times ran a <\/span>profile<\/span><\/a> of Margaret Atwood in early September, fans went in hard praising the accompanying portraits of the Canadian author online: \u201cThe most perfect thing I have ever seen in my life,\u201d\u00a0 wrote one Twitter user, while adjectives like \u2018fabulous\u2019, \u2018obsessed\u2019 and \u2018iconic\u2019 abounded.\u00a0<\/span>Shot by Tim Walker\u2014and involving an Atwood-and-an-egg situation\u2014the photographs were naturally all those things, and more. Just two weeks later, one of Walker\u2019s instantly memorable\u00a0 pictures of Atwood is already hanging in a museum, alongside portraits of Frank Ocean and David Hockney as part of his biggest exhibition yet, <\/span>Wonderful Things<\/a>, <\/span><\/i>which opened on Saturday at the V&A in London.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaking photographs, to me, is really a kind of dream state,\u201d reads a text panel accompanying the new show, Walker\u2019s third solo exhibit. Uniquely, and as if to call attention to the personal nature of <\/span>Wonderful Things<\/span><\/i>, Walker has written all of the panels himself, offering fans an intimate perspective on his\u00a0<\/span>spectacular and singular vision.\u00a0<\/span>The largest public display of his photographs to date, <\/span>Wonderful Things<\/span><\/i> presents an extensive body of work from the photographer\u2019s magical, often other-worldly universe, showcasing highlights from the last 25 years and celebrating his close personal connection to the museum with a 10-part series produced to honour its collections.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFashion photography is the dream department of photography,\u201d writes Walker on a later panel, characterising his practise. \u201cWhen you\u2019re a fashion photographer, everything is an illusion from the start. The set designer has been collaborating with Walker for almost 20 years\u2014his aesthetic is intrinsically linked to her fantastic creations of epic proportions\u2014and the partnership is keenly felt throughout <\/span>Wonderful Things<\/span><\/i>. Look up and you\u2019ll think you\u2019re on set, step through and you\u2019ll be greeted with XL-sized splashes of white paint, a room containing four different pink florals (!), and the interior of a stately home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bookended by Walker\u2019s archive and pages from a mammoth sized journal, the core of the exhibition are the images made in response to the museum\u2019s own wonderful things: from Edith Sitwell\u2019s gold shoes to a McQueen frock in storage and a stained glass window. \u201cEach picture is an attempt to capture the emotion I felt on meeting these objects and the stories they conjured in my mind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
