While the \u201880s might be known as the ugly era of decor, London-based retail manager Simon Knight is working hard to change people\u2019s perceptions with his delightfully garish interiors Instagram account, <\/span>@the_80s_interior<\/span><\/a>. Showcasing the maximalist design of the era\u2014think gaudy neons alongside nauseating pastels, chunky TV sets, garish tiles, and a lush abundance of tropical palms\u2014the account is the antithesis to the contemporary obsession with clean white-walled minimalism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now boasting an impressive 144k followers Knight started<\/span> @the_80s_interior<\/span> back in 2017 when when he was searching for pictures of an old shopping mall he used to visit. He posted some photos on his account, and received such a positive\u00a0 reaction from friends that he thought \u201cthere\u2019s and Instagram account to be made here!\u201d Plucking the kitschy images from old interiors books and magazines\u2014salvaged from extensive Ebay and thrift shop trawling\u2014 the inspiration was simply the sensation of nostalgia. \u201cIt takes people back to a time they remember fondly, even a touch or smell,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The anything-goes ethos of the account has only one exception: no people. \u201cOn my feed I like the interiors to be void of people as I like my followers to imagine themselves in the rooms and make it their own,\u201d explains Knight. \u201cIt also just looks nicer, more like a set piece.\u201d From pastel velveteen sofas and peachy colour palettes to mirrored elevators and kaleidoscopic bathroom tiling and hot-tubs galore, <\/span>@the_80s_interior<\/span> is a treasure trove of over-the-top \u201880s design. And Knight\u2019s personal favourite feature?
