Search \u201cbride\u201d on Instagram and over 52 million images crop up. The vast majority of these are women in pale creamy chiffons, champagne lace and enormous taffeta ball gowns glistening white. Lakin Ogunbanwo\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0portraits of Nigerian brides in their wedding dresses couldn\u2019t be more different. They are all vibrant, dazzling colour\u2014royal purple and sugar pinks; tangerine; turquoise; festive crimson and gold; a veil of luminous lime green. Called <\/span>e w\u00e1 wo mi <\/span><\/i>(which translates as \u201ccome look at me\u201d in English), the series is a stunning study in detail and sumptuous ceremonial fashion, all the while bringing questions of performance, ritual and the construction of female identity to the fore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently on display at Niki Cryan Gallery<\/a>, <\/span>e w\u00e1 wo mi <\/span><\/i>is a branch of <\/span>Ogunbanwo\u2019s ongoing project, <\/span>Are We Good Enough<\/span><\/i>, which showcases the types of traditional hats worn by different ethnic groups in Nigeria\u2014the first time that the two series have been exhibited together. Working at the intersection of fashion and portrait photography, Ogunbanwo\u2019s arresting\u2014and frequently enigmatic images\u2014reveal the part that fashion and clothes play in identity construction. In <\/span>e w\u00e1 wo mi<\/span><\/i>, the women hail from the <\/span>Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa-Fulani tribes respectively, and the images honour the variety of styles and mode of dress common to each of these tribes, ultimately celebrating the diversity of brides in the country. Of course, at the same time, the portraits emphasise the strange extravagance of marriage ceremonies, not just in Nigeria, but universally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Against elaborate draped backdrops, and adorned in beads and lace, the brides are magnificent and regal. It is impossible to imagine them operating in the real world, beyond the gleam of <\/span>Ogunbanwo\u2019s lens.
