"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe basis of the exhibition is the question: which is more important for forming our image of the world\u2014the isolated moment or the continuous flow of more or less repeating images that come to us every day?\u201d This is how Hans Eijkelboom, the photographer whom Martin Parr<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would call upon if he were a student of anthropology, introduces his latest body of work, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.martinparrfoundation.org\/events\/street-fusion-bristol-in-2019-by-hans-eijkelboom\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Street Fusion: Bristol in 2019<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, currently on display at the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marking the Dutch photographer\u2019s first solo outing in the UK, the show comprises over 750 images shot across 11 days last July, laid out in three lines covering 24 metres: it\u2019s a visual formula previously untested by Eijkelboom and underscores his aforementioned intentions (featured in Parr\u2019s 2016 show, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strange and Familiar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Barbican, his images were projected in a manner closer to a PowerPoint presentation). Earlier work placed him literally in the frame\u2014for example in 1973\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With My Family<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which he \u2018stepped in\u2019 for father figures in family portraits, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 Euro Outfits<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where he modelled looks styled together on a budget of \u20ac10, shot between 2005-2006 and published in a 2010 book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the 1990s, he\u2019s been drawn to so-called \u2018anti-sartorial\u2019 uniforms, photographing unintentional tribes\u2014men in double denim, women carrying Abercrombie &amp; Fitch carrier bags \u2014for a project called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo Notes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, culminating in the 2014 book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People of the Twenty-First Century<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. "}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI started working with the concept of identity because of distrust of humanity,\u201d Eijkelboom says of his initial interest in studying people. \u201cAs a child just after the war, it was difficult to believe in human goodness. As a result, there was a distrust in myself, what would I have done if I had seen Jews being taken away? Gradually it became clear that such questions are absurd, but the given identity continued to concern me.\u201d Slowly, he says, by looking at people a lot, his relationship with and affection for humanity changed. He continues to be engrossed: that \u201cattempting to find a way in the complex world as a vulnerable individual remains a fascinating process,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether occupying the image himself or shifting his lens onto those around him, the way people present themselves is the nucleus of Eijkelboom\u2019s catalogue; it is what has enabled his trajectory, generating similar intrigue and delight in its audiences. Last summer, for example, while Eijkelboom was photographing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Street Fusion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Instagram accounts like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hot4thespot\/?hl=en\">@Hot4TheSpot<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BzTj7y3HR0_\/\">@leopardmidiskirt<\/a>\u2014 tongue in cheek appreciative pages for a popular Zara dress and R\u00e9alisation Par\u2019s leopard skirt, respectively\u2014gained traction for similar observational images.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A natural shift brought about by the internet\u2019s increased domination is something Eijkelboom himself has previously alluded to. Speaking to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2014, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2014\/oct\/23\/hans-eijkelboom-street-photography-tribes-people-twenty-first-century\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he commented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201cyounger people now, I see more and more that the Web is their city. It\u2019s more important now to have an identity on the Web, which is very different from an identity shown through your clothes.\u201d Elaborating today, he suggests, \u201cIn the past, the town square or main shopping street played a major role in the exploration of the question: \u2018who am I and what is my relationship with others and the world?\u2019.
