sexual realm\u2014it can be as innocent as craving a piece of chocolate. But just as desire can be childlike and carnal, it can also inspire feelings of disgust and aversion. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/efremidisgallery.com\/exhibitions\/squish-2\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SQUISH<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a new group show at Efremidis Gallery in Berlin, questions the encounter between desire, aromanticism, revulsion, and art. The tantalising works of Carlotta Bailly-Borg, Christiane Blattmann, Lindsay Lawson, Teresa Solar and Jens Kothe test the limits of temptation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Curators Carlota Iba\u00f1ez de Aldecoa Silvestre and Julie Gaspard finalised the concept for the exhibition after seeing a curious work by German artist Jens Kothe. Kothe\u2019s furry bench-like object prompted feelings of \u201cwanting to touch but also to not\u201d in the curators. This uncanny combination of disgust and enticement are the building blocks for <i>SQUISH<\/i>\u2014\u201cat the beginning the works are all beautiful but the more you look the less angelic everything becomes,\u201d says Gaspard.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, we take a look at some of the exhibiting works to see what they can teach us about desire, and all its complexities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. The bodies in Carlotta Bailly-Borg\u2019s series <em>C<\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hit-Chat (\u2018L\u2019Aube\u2019, Le Cr\u00e9puscule, L\u2019Aurore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are genderless, androgynous beings that morph into each other. Gaspard describes the series<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201ccreepy because it\u2019s that kind of love where you lose yourself\u201d. Indeed, these paintings emanate a co-dependent energy. Without exception, the pairs in each painting face each other while their arms and legs melt and interlace; they mirror one another. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019Aurore,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this is particularly assailing, one of the figures smokes a cigarette, and though the other holds nothing between their fingers, they\u2019re still perched up: ready to receive. They crave the lover\u2019s cigarette just as they would a caress or a kiss: their desire an addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Teresa Solar\u2019s installation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything is OK<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is disarming exactly because of this: the magnificent pink glazed ceramic tube, like an intestine or a vagina, leaves traces of itself along the exhibition floor. For Iba\u00f1ez de Aldecoa Silvestre, its impact became clear when at the opening she overheard a visitor sigh \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish I could just touch it\u201d. The remnants of the central piece are strewn like a snake&#8217;s skin, and provoke, as Gaspard suggests, a \u201cvisceral reaction\u201d in the viewer. The aluminium structures that attempt to hold it in place are superfluous. The abundant organicism of desire eludes all control.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Standing in front of Jens Kothe\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stressed Membranes II,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Gaspard comments \u2018I\u2019m surprised no one touched it at the opening\u201d to which\u00a0Iba\u00f1ez de Aldecoa Silvestre quickly retorted, \u201cI\u2019m sure they did, we just didn\u2019t see it,\u201d adding \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you just want to stick your finger or peer inside\u201d. The visible and the unknown are at play in all of Kothe\u2019s work but, in this one in particular, the crevices and nooks, which expose the inner workings of the sculpture, turn the viewer into a gazer. The exposed materials\u2014foam, silicone\u2014clue the viewer into the artist&#8217;s process. Tantalising and seductive, the work invites you to look further, but inside the small holes there\u2019s nothing to be found. It draws you into an abyss of nothingness, at once fixating and frustrating, just like desire.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>5.
