Knife + Heart<\/em> is a lot to wrap your head around, even before a masked killer shows up. Set in the summer of 1979 and starring Vanessa Paradis as a lesbian porn director, there\u2019s plenty of sex and slasher-style violence, but what really steals the show is its aesthetic excess. Told through an extended flashback, Persepolis<\/em> recounts its director\u2019s (Marjane Satrapi\u2019s) childhood during the Iranian Revolution, as well as tackling larger questions around national identity and familial duty. In the fighting spirit of the Bruce Lee films she loves as a child, we see Satrapi\u2019s on-screen alter-ego morph from overconfident young girl to a rebellious young woman, keen to take on the injustices of the world around her. Adapted from Satrapi\u2019s comic book of the same name, Persepolis<\/em> stands out as much for its story as for the stunning simplicity of its bold black and white animation. Released in 2012, Neighbouring Sounds<\/em> offers a 360 view of class in a bourgeois neighbourhood, stitching minute episodes of privilege together to sew a panorama of exploitation, guilt and colonialism. Flitting past characters with no fixed point of view, the film races through an encyclopaedia of shots and edit styles\u2014zooming, tracking and fading with abandon. Barry Jenkin\u2019s poetic screenplay, Trevante Rhodes\u2019 understated performance as Chiron and its genre-blending score all combine to make it one of the past decade\u2019s most striking films\u2014and we\u2019ve not even got onto the cinematography yet.
