In an ideal world, he wouldn\u2019t have been killed at all. Yet, here we are again, gripped by the now all-too familiar spectacle<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of a black body\u2019s destruction. In a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/157734\/white-witness-contemporary-lynching\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> powerful piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by American writer and academic Zo\u00e9 Samudzi about the contemporary function of the white witness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the misguided belief that passive viewership can translate into structural justice, she references <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/ahmaud-arbery-shooting-georgia.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahmaud Arbery\u2019s murder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in South Georgia in February\u2014which only became public knowledge in May\u2014to state what we already know: \u201cThe pattern of learning a new hashtagged name and face and collectively petitioning for some semblance of punitive justice is heartbreakingly banal and psychologically depleting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A global awareness of racism and of anti-blackness has consistently failed to undo racism&#8217;s structural manifestations because white privilege and white supremacy are two sides of the same coin. White supremacy is invoked <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in defence of<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> white privilege, the murderers act <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on behalf of<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what they believe to be the white \u2018race\u2019\u2014which is why white silence in this context is complicity. The aftermath of Floyd\u2019s death took me back to July 2016, when I arrived in Atlanta, Georgia for a month-long fellowship exploring race, civil rights and immigration. On the 5 July, the day of my arrival, 37-year-old Alton Sterling was murdered by police in Baton Rouge. A day later, 32-year-old Phil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ando Castille met his death at the hands of police in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. I was promptly reminded why the fellowship was so expedient all these years after the civil rights movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the next three days of protest, \u00a0I felt\u2014borrowing the words of Martiniquais poet Aime Cesaire\u2014a cosmic anger, much like we feel now.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decisive action was necessary now that we had all seen what we know well: in an anti-black world, black life is cheap and black death unmournable. I learnt a lot on those Atlanta streets. Importantly, I experienced first-hand how shortness of breath is inextricably tied to being racialised as black. <\/span>We choked on teargas, gasped at the sight of the national guard pulling in and heaved with exasperation after days of chanting. It was always the air. Running. In Nairobi, Kenya, where I was born, one is not necessarily black at birth, one just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. First, a baby. Then, a toddler, a child, a teenager. Intermittently, one performs religion, ethnicity, gender, class or nationality when it fits the occasion. At 19\u2014and in subsequent years of living in Germany\u2014I became an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ausl\u00e4nder<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I am still becoming African: learning the histories and languages that formal education did not teach me, and reconciling with the realisation that the images that \u2018Africa\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conjures have nothing to do with the place I grew up in. In Atlanta, I joined the protest because regardless of where I was from, it still <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could have been me. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why Black Lives Matter\u2019s claim that it is a global movement for black lives hits differently for me because, in case we forget that these things are arbitrary social constructs, I am a recent arrival <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blackness. The colour of my skin\u2014and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fsk12.bpb.de\/mediathek\/283417\/i-am-not-your-negro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Baldwin contended this by saying \u201cI am not your Negro\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the reason for my blackness, whiteness is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because we have perfected a twisted voyeurism towards the most fatal forms of police violence in the US, racist police brutality happening under our noses surprises only those of us who have chosen to ignore it. Black people are, and I am paraphrasing black-diasporas scholar\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yCnDcTC7hFo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanessa Thompson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here, no longer the wretched, but the policed-of-the-earth. Globally, when the police can be said to be doing their job properly, black people and people of colour will be disproportionately brutalised and over-policed. For their part, white and lighter-skinned people\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2020\/05\/29\/amy-cooper-white-woman\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communities are under-policed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is true in South Africa, Germany, China, Brazil, US, to name but a few. In Kenya, fatal violence at the hands of the police is also prevalent\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/article\/2001373651\/nairobians-join-in-protests-against-police-brutality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the latest killing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was as recent as 1 June. A<\/span>cross the globe, security is produced through conditions of social and physical <i>un-breathing<\/i> (metaphorically \u2018I can&#8217;t breathe\u2019) where policing assumes the role of an institutionalised global white gaze.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Systems of policing affirm whiteness even in its physical absence; they are the go-betweens between white supremacy and the racialised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"instagram","code":"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CA-EsCTqeQo\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link","settings":{"width":"10"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"blockquote","text":"\"Across the globe, security is produced through conditions of social and physical un-breathing (metaphorically \u2018I can't breathe\u2019) where policing assumes the role of an institutionalised global white gaze.\"","source":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though most of us here in Germany are finally awakening to the global dangers of being black, I do not feel safe because those hazards\u2014even by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/un-experts-accuse-germany-of-structural-racism\/a-37745700\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN standards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014are chronically underestimated in this country. Names like Ourry Jalloh, Christy Schwundek or N&#8217;deye Mariame Sarr among many others do not ring a bell here like Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tony McDade or Breonna Taylor rightfully do in the US and beyond. In 2001, police shot Sarr when they were called to resolve a domestic dispute in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria. Jalloh was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/taz.de\/Gedenken-an-Oury-Jalloh-in-Dessau\/!5654506\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burnt to death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a Dessau police cell in 2005. Schwundek was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hessen-thueringen.dgb.de\/presse\/++co++018fd6d8-86bb-11e0-70ac-00188b4dc422\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shot by police<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Frankfurt\u2019s unemployment office in 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these deaths were a result of racial profiling, which although illegal, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hertie-school.org\/the-governance-post\/2018\/03\/cold-welcome-racial-profiling-germany\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widespread in many German states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including Berlin. For survivors, the Campaign for Victims of Racist Police Violence chronicles across <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kop-berlin.de\/files\/documents\/chronik.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 300-page report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> two decades-worth of such cases in Berlin alone. Racial profiling does not end when the police leave, it is dispersed into black peoples lives long-term. However\u2014and this is the structural injustice here\u2014there is a visceral futility to recounting these cases. Always, over and above the violent, racist incidents themselves, the burden is always on us, the policed-of-the-earth, to provide evidence. Ultimately, black people&#8217;s feelings towards racism, anti-blackness and police violence have not changed for as long as we have endured it. The question is, have yours?
