poem from her new collection, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Baby First Birthday<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/tinhouse.com\/book\/my-baby-first-birthday\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(out now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Tin House Books). In another (the sagely titled \u201cThe Universal Energy Is About To Intervene In Your Life\u201d she states, \u201cI am pure emotion and you must pour me\u201d. Zhang\u2019s poems deal in the knotty currency of feeling. Of feeling lonely and hurt, sad and soft, of wanting to be desired and babyed at the same time, heard and understood. They are leaky\u2014they release emotions in sad dribbles and great, gut-wrenching gushes (\u201cI leak blood memory,\u201d she writes in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInstant Classic\u201d). \u201cThese poems are about oozy, gooey feelings, persistent feelings,\u201d she explains over Zoom. \u201cThere\u2019s a hotness to them&#8230;I guess I never thought it was a bad thing to have a poem make you feel a lot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 97 poems in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Baby First Birthday<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were written by Zhang between 2012 and 2018. During this time, she also published her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/au\/sour-heart-9781408892374\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first short story collection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sour Heart <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2017)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to much critical acclaim. Recipient of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and PEN\/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction among others, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sour Heart <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collects eight stories written from the perspectives of first-generation Chinese-American women as they look back over their girlhood. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/jenny-zhangs-obscene-beautiful-moving-story-collection-sour-heart\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Praised as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cobscene, beautiful, moving\u201d by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Yorker, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for one,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sour Heart <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a coming-of-age quite unlike any other\u2014the private lives of girls are unspooled as gross as much as they are beautiful, dappled with the love and generosity of friendship and family at the same time as they are smeared with bodily horror (in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sour Heart <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018intimacy\u2019 frequently veers towards the scatological in terms of describing the inner lives of its characters). Reading<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sour Heart <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alongside<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> My Baby First Birthday <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is possible to think that there might be a relationship between the two, if only because Zhang\u2019s voice is so instantly recognisable as hers. \u201cI feel like in some ways the speakers of these poems are like their mothers,\u201d she says. \u201cNot always in the literal, biological sense as though they have given birth to them&#8230;but I feel that they are older, they are like nurturers in a way, so I think it\u2019s a different voice, but it\u2019s still a continuum of womanhood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"blockquote","text":"I never thought it was a bad thing to have a poem make you feel a lot.","source":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if Zhang considers the voice in these poems to be older than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sour Heart\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speakers, much of the collection operates on a pre-social or linguistic plane\u2014words frequently dissolve into baby babble\u2014\u201cgoo goo baby\u201d\u2014 and impulsive cries of \u201cwhyyyyyyyyyy me?\u201d. There are guttural squeals of \u201cThis is how I became a gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah\u201d and frequent outbursts. The speakers bemoan \u201cbad days\u201d and having nothing to say, and whimper \u201cI guess I am lonely still\u201d. Here, Zhang takes the concept of \u2018intimacy\u2019 to uncharted territories\u2014it is not so much like reading someone\u2019s diary, squirming with the ickiness of secrets, or even getting a look inside their head, it\u2019s like existing somewhere in the speaker\u2019s deepest innards, nestled between blood and bone, goo and gunk, muscle and flesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sour Heart<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Baby First Birthday<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do share a common thread it is precisely in conveying the light and shade and chaotic particularities of the \u201ccontinuum of womanhood\u201d. In her short stories this manifests as presenting the \u201cconstant paradoxes and dualities\u201d of growing up, whereas her poems swing between\u2014as she calls it\u2014 \u201cextreme poles\u201d of existence. \u201cOne is like: why was I ever born and the other is: thank God I got to live this life, thank you so much the blessings!\u201d Zhang explains. (Others include: the oscillation between \u201cthe pain\u201d and \u201cwild joys\u201d of being a girl, the liberation and violation of touch, or the wonder of love as opposed to its suffering, she says.) But although the poems grapple with these contradictions, they are not conflicting forces; more so they are fluid, dichotomous ideas that run alongside and within each other. The opening poem, \u201cI keep thinking there is an August\u201d, sets the scene: \u201c&#8230; like how life is both impossible and happening at the same time.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"instagram","code":"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CDWRqZuF0LT\/","settings":{"width":"10"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zhang starts from the beginning, dwelling on birth and giving birth and fixates on dying. \u201cWe want to mean something to the world,\u201d she writes in \u201cThe Universal Energy Is About To Intervene In Your Life\u201d, and this could be the central cord running through the collection. When asked what sort of things she was inspired by when writing these poems, her answer is surprising. As well as films that \u201cplay with nostalgia, memory and time\u201d (such as the 2010 Thai feature <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) Zhang also says she was \u201cdrawn to things that seem to come from a place outside or before, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the systems we have created to communicate meaning\u201d, such as tarot and the ancient Chinese divination text, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Ching<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTarot for me is a medium to have a conversation with myself, mediated through this thing that uses archetypes and various ways of interpreting meaning to open up possibility,\u201d Zhang says. \u201cI like systems that are not just about beginning, middle and end, but are also about synchronicity and how something has meaning because of the meaning you impart on it &#8230;. light is not something that cancels out shadow, darkness is not something to fear, just as brightness is not something to lust after, they are just parts of a whole\u2014that was very, very influential for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"blockquote","text":"The only way to access fears and despair is to really go into them, and poetry provides a safe way to do that.","source":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_area","text_area":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In spite of her own admission of being influenced by pre- and after-states to describe the wobbliness feeling, Zhang\u2019s poems are planted very much in the struggles and pains of reality. As the title suggests, the act of mothering is a preoccupation throughout. \u201cMotherhood to me is about nurturing and caring&#8230;that can happen in any relationship, any place and any time,\u201d she says. \u201cI wanted to open that up and love motherhood in all its forms, love what it takes to be a mother and also to be real about the labour of motherhood.\u201d But many of the poems also engage with bleak societal problems, namely rampant racism and misogyny and the violent current of feelings these injustices incite. A stand-out poem, \u201cneeds revision!\u201d delivers a furious takedown of rape culture, one which is perpetrated by a wealthy white patriarchy. Other poems recount what it is to be the only non-white person \u201cat the poetry reading\u201d, for example, or what it is to be praised for speaking \u201cperfect English, there\u2019s no accent at all\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poetrymagazine\/articles\/70231\/how-it-feels\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 essay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry Foundation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cHow it feels\u201d, Zhang wrote about her desire to have poems to describe every little moment in life, not just the big, important ones when someone dies or gets married:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cB<\/span>ut I want elegies while I\u2019m still alive, I want rhapsodies though I\u2019ve never seen Mount Olympus. I want ballads, I want ugly, grating sounds, I want repetition, I want white space, I want juxtaposition and metaphor and meditation and all caps and erasure and blank verse and sonnets and even center-aligned italicised poems that rhyme, and most of all\u2009\u2014 feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zhang\u2019s words take on new potential in the coronavirus era, where, ostensibly, poetry is having a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/books\/2020\/07\/ovid-covid-why-poetry-enjoying-renaissance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renaissance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23PandemicPoems&amp;src=hashtag_click\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many continue to share poems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the hashtag <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23PandemicPoems&amp;src=hashtag_click\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#PandemicPoems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Twitter, or post uplifting snippets on Instagram Stories).
