As profiled in the Film category of our <\/span>10×10<\/span><\/a> series where we select the creative forces shaping Berlin, <\/span>Daniel Br\u00fchl<\/span><\/a> shot to international prominence for his role as Alex in 2003\u2019s lauded satirical East Berlin drama, <\/span>Good Bye Lenin!. <\/span><\/i>His portrayal as Alex earned him a spot as the only German on that year\u2019s selection of <\/span>European Shooting Stars<\/span><\/a>, as well as scooping numerous awards including Best European Actor at the European Film Awards and Best Performance at the German Film Awards in 2003.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, Br\u00fchl’s career has gone from strength to strength, which has seen him become a regular feature on Hollywood\u2019s flicks, appearing in Tarantino\u2019s <\/span>Inglourious Basterds <\/span><\/i><\/a>(2009), tense sporting drama <\/span>Rush<\/span><\/i><\/a> (2013) and box-office favourite <\/span>Captain America: Civil War<\/span><\/i><\/a> (2016)<\/span>. <\/span><\/i>He hasn\u2019t pigeonholed himself just to big-screen roles either \u2014his performance as the lead in Netflix Originals\u2019 <\/span>The Alienist<\/span><\/i><\/a> (2019) <\/span><\/i>saw him secure a second Golden Globe nomination. He has also embarked on his first foray into executive production in Julie Delpy\u2019s Berlin-set <\/span>My Zoe<\/span><\/i><\/a> (2019).<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2021, Br\u00fchl makes his directorial debut with <\/span>Nebenan (Next Door)<\/span><\/a>, which premieres at this year’s Berlinale. Like many other award ceremonies and festivals, the<\/span> Berlinale<\/span><\/a> has had to adjust proceedings in order to make it compliant with current restrictions. A <\/span>two-stage<\/span><\/a> solution has been devised in order to make this possible: from 1st to 5th March trade visitors and press representatives will have online access to this year’s selection of films. The second stage, known as the Summer Special will run from 9th to 20th June 9th in a selection of Berlin’s cinemas hosting screenings and panel discussions with filmmakers.<\/span><\/p>\n
