SLEEK publisher, Christian Bracht put it this way when he said to his team, headed by Editor-in-Chief Anja Prinz: “This is probably the best edition we’ve ever put out there.” He has a point. With this edition of SLEEK #69 we wanted to re-examine what courage means and whether its meaning has changed over time. a time that is polarizing, rebellious and a pandemic still raging for most people around the world. It was with the sincerest effort to review the Beuys legacy and his understanding of art as a socio-political responsibility as well as the need to hear from artists whose work has been disrupted, interrupted, in some cases silenced during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

This offering ranges from interviews with R\u00f3is\u00edn Murphy and Helmut Lang; articles by film director Soleen Yusef and Max Hollein, director of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and a \u2018Beuys dress\u2019 designed by Nina Hollein, and modelled by German singer and actor Lary. And then there was Jonathan Meese and Michael Breitz, who created exclusive works in response to our theme, as well as dancer Kian\u00ed del Valle, who put on a special performance, produced by SLEEK, at the Beuys exhibition now showing at Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin.<\/p>\n

All of these artists. performers, people who made an impact in their respective fields, brought to the table a panoply of views on the artist that is Beuys and the Zeitgeist now that requires more courage than many of us have had to muster in living memory.<\/p>\n

We’re hoping this offering will inform and inspire you the way it did us and we promise, we won’t stop here because we already know what\u2019s coming in our next issue in September.<\/p>\n
