Geboren in Neuseeland, lebt in Berlin Simon Denny<\/a> erlebt gerade seinen gro\u00dfen Moment. Er nimmt an Massimiliano Gionis Ausstellung \u201cThe Encyclopedic Palace\u201d auf der 55.th<\/sup> Er ist f\u00fcr die Biennale in Venedig nominiert, f\u00fcr den Young Art Prize der Nationalgalerie in Berlin und gewann 2012 den Baloise-Kunstpreis bei der Art Basel Statements.<\/p>\n

Denny interessiert sich f\u00fcr die Entwicklung und die Widerspr\u00fcche unserer durch und durch mediatisierten Gesellschaft. Seine Installationen, Objekte und Projekte konzentrieren sich auf die Zusammenh\u00e4nge zwischen Ver\u00e4nderungen in den Bereichen Medien, Wirtschaft, \u00c4sthetik und Politik \u2013 mit ihrem sich st\u00e4ndig wiederholenden und stets schnell veraltenden Versprechen des Neuen. Seine aktuelle Einzelausstellung im Wiener mumok kn\u00fcpft an seinen k\u00fcnstlerischen Schwerpunkt an, der auf dem Aufeinandertreffen alter und neuer Technologien liegt, verkn\u00fcpft mit aktuellen Ereignissen und zeitgen\u00f6ssischem Design: Hier untersucht er die rechtlichen und kulturellen Auswirkungen der Schlie\u00dfung von Kim Dotcoms Filesharing-Plattform Megaupload.<\/p>\n

Megaupload, einst eine der beliebtesten Plattformen f\u00fcr den Datenaustausch im Internet, hatte beispiellose Folgen f\u00fcr den internationalen Datenaustausch, das V\u00f6lkerrecht und die lokale Medienlandschaft in Neuseeland. Nach Ermittlungen des FBI und einer Klage vor einem US-Gericht wurden Megaupload und Megavideo im Januar 2012 geschlossen, laut Anklageschrift, \u201cum eine weltweit operierende kriminelle Organisation zu zerschlagen, deren Mitglieder in gro\u00dfem Stil Urheberrechtsverletzungen begingen und riesige Geldsummen wuschen, wobei der Gesamtschaden mehr als 500 Millionen US-Dollar betrug.\u201d<\/p>\n

Als die neuseel\u00e4ndische Polizei die Villa des in Deutschland geborenen Dotcom in Coatsville durchsuchte, beschlagnahmte sie eine Reihe von Gegenst\u00e4nden, darunter 175 Millionen US-Dollar in bar, 60 Dell-Server, 22 Luxusautos, zahlreiche Bildschirme und Kunstwerke. Die Rechtm\u00e4\u00dfigkeit dieser Polizeiaktion wurde sp\u00e4ter in Frage gestellt (Dotcom erhielt k\u00fcrzlich einige seiner Server vom FBI zur\u00fcck), was zudem eine Debatte \u00fcber das Eigentumsrecht und die Weitergabe von Daten ausl\u00f6ste. Denny stellt eine Reihe von Gegenst\u00e4nden zusammen, um diese Liste skulptural zu visualisieren. Bilder, Dateien und Unternehmensdaten \u2013 von einer lebensgro\u00dfen Predator-Statue bis zu drei Kubikmetern Bargeld, von einem luxuri\u00f6sen \u201cArbeitsbett\u201d bis hin zu Beispielen aus Dotcoms Kunstsammlung \u2013 umrei\u00dfen alle 110 Punkte auf der Liste. Das Ergebnis ist eine gro\u00dfformatige Installation, die Denny als \u201cSammlung von Kopien, Plagiaten und Nachahmungen der \u2018echten\u2019 Schmuggelware\u201d beschreibt. Dies \u201cwird einen greifbaren Mittelpunkt f\u00fcr eine der derzeit wohl wichtigsten rechtlichen Diskussionen bilden \u2013 die ja eng mit Grenzen, Recht, Unterhaltung und der Frage verflochten ist, was es bedeutet, zu stehlen, \u00fcberwacht zu werden und wem was geh\u00f6rt.\u201d<\/p>\n
