\u201cIt\u2019s a process,\u201d she insists, but indie R&B angel ABRA<\/a> is learning that she doesn\u2019t have to do everything herself. Despite her independent impulses and DIY disposition, she trusted Boys Noize<\/a> to co-produce her last single \u201cUnlock It<\/a>\u201d \u2013 and it\u2019s ushered in a new era for the LA-based artist.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wish we didn\u2019t have to be these self-contained gods all the time,\u201d she reflects. In the middle of our interview (we were chatting about getting lost in mental health Instagram rabbit holes), she asks: \u201cEverything always has to be so self-generated, you know?\u201d She poses the question rhetorically, of course \u2013 throwing it out into the world without demanding an answer \u2013 but her thoughts are open-ended, open to a rejoinder. It’s this same quality that has allowed her music to resonate with so many and continues to inspire her devoted following. A living extension of her music, ABRA is the kind of artist who expresses herself generously, vulnerably, and then risks the implicit question: \u2018Am I alone in this?\u2019<\/p>\n

The question seems to haunt her tender tracks and feels all the more appropriate given her DIY beginnings: ABRA emerged out of Atlanta writing, recording, and producing her own work, exercising complete creative control over every decision. She traces her creative independence to her itinerant upbringing, which traversed the Atlantic under the direction of her Christian missionary parents \u2013 from New York to London to Atlanta, each new stop inflected her artistry. \u201cI don\u2019t ever remember feeling powerful when I was younger. I felt very out of control,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen I finally had something that I love so much with music, I was like, \u2018Don\u2019t even: this is my world and I\u2019ll protect it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

And she did: ABRA\u2019s first album Rose <\/em>(2015) feels as if it were recorded in the patent intimacy of her bedroom closet. Its haunting sensitivity and ethereal sound made it a cult classic \u2013 a forlorn monument to the turbulent angst of desire, sung sweetly over 808s. \u201cI used to base all of my confidence in the fact that I was making everything myself,\u201d she shares, \u201cThat was a huge thing. ABRA\u2019s fierce independence has been tempered by a new creative self-confidence in the immutability of her artistry that she earned by overcoming a \u201creally, really rough period from 2016 to 2019,\u201d during which her creative output slowed. During this time, she starred in Euphoria creator Sam Levinson\u2019s 2018 film Assassination Nation<\/em><\/a>; for mere mortals, this might sound like the pinnacle of validation \u2013 but ABRA is relentless in her pursuit of excellence in her craft. \u201cI was writing music through that whole break,\u201d she explains, \u201cbut nothing was sticking, nothing was compelling me. I was like, \u2018Step it up, bitch, you just have to dig deeper.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Then came \u201cUnlock It.\u201d<\/p>\n

ABRA describes the track as her \u201cfirst song back in many senses\u201d \u2013 through it, she \u201cunlocked [her]self from a lot of unhealthy thoughts and spaces.\u201d Crucially, it also silenced her doubts: \u201cWhen I wrote that, I realized that it wasn’t a fluke: Rose<\/em> wasn’t a fluke, Princess<\/em> [her 2016 EP] wasn’t. I was like, \u2018Oh man, you still got it.\u2019\u201d The Internet\u2019s reigning @darkwaveduchess<\/a> was back. \u201cIt was the light I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

That same light continues to emanate from ABRA herself: she has fortified her connection with herself and cultivated trust in her intuition: \u201cI realized that if I make music that makes me<\/em> happy \u2013 and I\u2019m like, \u2018Wow, I just did that for myself and it\u2019s lit\u2019 \u2013 then I\u2019ve done my thing. I hadn’t done that in a long time and I\u2019d forgotten.\u201d It was only by forgetting that she could remember, though, and she describes her current mood as \u201cmomentous.\u201d ABRA details how vital it has been for her to get to know herself intimately \u201cso no one else can tell you who you are and manipulate that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s only been able to find her power, her sound, her anchor, through communing with herself. \u201cI\u2019ve learned how important it is to be connected and trust yourself,\u201d she explains. \u201cThat’s something I always had trouble with, I would kind of disassociate from the what my body was telling me.\u201d Not only has ABRA been re-associating with her intuition, but she has been actively celebrating it: \u201cYour body loves you so much and things like anger and sadness, all those things they try to train out of us, they’re actually really helpful!\u201d She describes her experience in feminist terms: \u201cWomen have been taught that anger is a disgusting thing \u2013 and it’s like, no! I need to be able to feel my anger, I need to be able to feel anxiety about things. Recalling her early days with Awful Records<\/a> \u2013 Atlanta\u2019s cagey independent rap label that spawned the careers of artists like Playboi Carti<\/a> and ILoveMakonnen<\/a> and Tommy Genesis<\/a> \u2013 ABRA reflects on how far she\u2019s come: \u201cI used to try so hard to be like one of the guys. I wanted to impress them. I just wanted to go about things the way that they did \u2013 like a savage and all this stuff. But that’s not where my power was.\u201d She widens the gyre: \u201cWe’re taught that a certain kind of power is the standard, but it doesn’t really bring the same confidence as you learning your own, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember making \u2018Fruit\u2019 and when I played it for someone [at Awful], they were like, \u2018Oh, no, this is not it,\u2019\u201d she recalls. \u201cBut that was my biggest song! If I had listened to them trying to go by \u2018This is not hard\u2026\u2019\u201d She trails off because that alternative is almost unthinkable: \u2018Fruit\u2019 changed her life (the music video<\/a> has over 20 million views on YouTube), but also impacted lives of countless others (as evidenced by impassioned viewer comments). \u201cI never used to think that my actions or who I am could affect other people,\u201d she reveals. \u201cBut everyone matters and the things you do matter \u2013 even if you don’t realize it. Like with \u2018Fruit,\u2019 I didn’t know how much it would mean to other people.\u201d Now, ABRA\u2019s at a point where she knows her work resonates: \u201cI do have power, I’m just trying to have some rein on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2016, Pitchfork <\/em>ended its review<\/a> of ABRA\u2019s last EP Princess<\/em> with the following: \u201cBehind the nostalgic tropes, there is a confident and self-possessed artist waiting to get out. But it\u2019s a little hard to hear in the cramped space of a bedroom closet.\u201d If working alone as a DIY artist was partially an act of self-protection, then electing to work with others is an act of courage: \u201cWe are in a time where there’s a lot of promotion of self and not enough community \u2013 or not enough sense that it’s okay to rely on people \u2013 that’s a theme that I would like to bring into my music. No matter if I’ve been a DIY or independent artist, I wouldn’t have been able to get here without help. I really want to make sure that I’m able to reciprocate the same amount of care that I received.\u201d<\/p>\n

This next phase testifies to ABRA\u2019s solidifying sense of self and fortified intuition. She\u2019s allowing others into her creative process while remaining confident that her distinct artistic vision will endure. \u201cIt\u2019s a process,\u201d ABRA insists, and nothing is ever certain: \u201cI guess that’s kind of darkwave \u2013 riding through uncertainty and still being like, \u2018I’m gonna be fire.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
