With a practice based in functionality Grimshaw Architects focuses on meeting the needs of the contemporary world. One of their recent projects is the Sustainability Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. The pavilion showcases sustainable technologies and practices through immersive experiences and interactive exhibits. The building itself is designed to be net-zero energy and is powered entirely by renewable sources. The pavilion is also designed to be disassembled and reused after the expo is over.
One of the biggest obstacles Grimshaw Architects faced was the extreme desert climate of Dubai; it was crucial to design a building which could withstand these conditions while remaining sustainable. They used passive cooling strategies such as shading and natural ventilation to reduce the building’s energy use. It was also important to consider the cultural context of the project and design a building that was respectful of local traditions and customs.
Behind all of their projects is their excitement for the future of sustainable design. The group is seeing more and more emphasis on regenerative design, which goes beyond just minimising negative impacts and actually aims to improve the environment. They are also seeing a greater integration of technology in sustainable design, which is enabling us to create more efficient and responsive buildings. They think the key to the future of sustainable design will be collaboration and a willingness to embrace new ideas and approaches.
