At Grüntuch Ernst, they believe in creating architecture that is rooted in its context and responds to the needs of the people who will inhabit or use their buildings. They aim to design buildings that are sustainable, energy-efficient, and timeless in their beauty. Beginning their process, they thoroughly analyze a site and its surroundings, including the cultural, social, and historical context; they take into consideration the climate, topography, and other site-specific conditions to create a design that is responsive to its environment. The architects collaborate closely with their clients to understand their needs and objectives for a project. From there, they can begin to develop a design concept that meets those needs while also achieving goals for sustainability, efficiency, and beauty.

One project highlighting the team’s emphasis on traditional values in architecture is at Darwinstraße in Berlin. A former power plant site in Berlin-Charlottenburg is undergoing a remarkable transformation, and at the forefront of this change is the new office building at Darwinstraße. This not only marks the first step in the conversion and reprogramming of the site but also showcases a harmonious blend of new working environments, ecological consciousness, and social benefits. With an expanded public space and a focus on functionality, sensuality, vitality, and biodiversity, this project sets a new standard for urban redevelopment and serves as a beacon for the future of the site.

The building is not only designed to provide quality spaces for users and visitors but also aims to create added value for city residents and enhance the urban ecosystem. The architectural strategy revolves around the concept of integrating natural elements into the building and its surroundings. By compactly developing the site, the project expands the public space and invites visitors on an enticing ascent to the landscaped roof park; several terraces lead to a green plateau, offering a panoramic view of the Spree River and the cityscape.

The recent pandemic has highlighted the limitations of indoor spaces and emphasized the significance of direct access to outdoor green areas. The spacious cascading staircase within the building connects workspaces with green zones on each level, providing employees with swift access to fresh air and the rooftop garden. Serving as a communal terrace, the roof garden creates unique spaces for work, leisure, and informal meetings. This innovative approach not only enhances employee well-being but also contributes to the improvement of the urban ecosystem.

The building on Darwinstraße establishes new benchmarks for redensification projects. By incorporating diverse natural elements on the rooftop, the project prioritizes well-being and enhances the microclimatic balance of the urban environment. The greenery is not treated as mere outdoor furniture but is an integral part of the design, thought through from the project’s early stages to ensure all biological and technical considerations are met.

The result is a modern, urban office building that serves as a valuable asset for urban society, combining functionality, sensuality, vitality, and biodiversity. It serves as a model for future development not only within the area but also beyond. The new office building at Darwinstraße stands as a testament to the transformative power of sustainable architecture. In its quest for a more environmentally conscious and community-oriented future, the project embraces natural elements, expansive green spaces, and a holistic approach to urban development. As the first step in the redevelopment of the former power plant site, it sets a high standard for future endeavors, paving the way for a thriving, sustainable urban quarter in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
