Set in the GDR in Berlin 1989, 18 year-old Suzie goes from a factory worker to model after a photo of her ends up in “SIBYLLE“, the Vogue of the East. “In einem Land, das es nicht mehr gibt“ explores the burdens of an adolescent trying to find her path in the restrictive system of the GDR through plots of friendship and falling in love.
Director Aelrun Goette tells her own story in the movie, with the character of Rudi [Suzie’s bestfriend] being based on her friend Frank Schäfer, who used to be an important character of GDR’s underground fashion scene. Both of them sat together with SLEEK publisher Christian Bracht after the screening in Soho House’s red room for a SLEEK Artist Talk, revealing insights of filming the movie and personal experiences of life in the GDR. Having lived through the past of East Germany themselves, Frank Schäfer and Aelrun Goette shared interesting details and gripping stories which inspired the movie.
