Although we will have to wait until May 2017, the news that Rei Kawakubo will be the focus of the next Costume Institute exhibition has the fashion industry buzzing. The Comme Des Garçons designer’s work from the first runway collection in 1981 until the present day, will be displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Japanese visionary is only the second ever living designer to have a Costume Institute exhibition in her honour, (the first being Yves Saint Laurent in 1983).
Andrew Bolton, Costume Institute curator, told Vogue “Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past 40 years. By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, re-creation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.”

The subject of the exhibition also dictates the theme for the biggest party in the fashion calendar – the Met Gala. Already known for its risk-taking red carpet looks, the upcoming ceremony is set to be the most avant-garde yet.
We wonder how the celeb guests will interpret the theme? will Sarah Jessica Parker sport a sharp black bob? Or, will Kendall Jenner sport a piece from the “Lumps and Bumps” collection? Most likely not, but we can’t wait to find out.
