2020s Street Style Is a Throwback Party

SLEEK: What draws you to street style?

Marijo Zupanov: I’m a free spirit and I love chaos. The streets are not arranged and I love to work out of control. I’m always collecting the courage to take the camera out to point and shoot.

S: What are you attracted by on the street?

MZ: I go by the vibe. It’s my inner nuclear reactor that pushes me to go after this or that person. I’m triggered no matter how greatly arranged or basic a dress, makeup, or accessory can be. It’s the whole vibe and the attitude of serving it!

S: What was your introduction to street photography?

MZ: I was smoking a cigarette after helping backstage at Acne Studios at Paris fashion week 2017 and the sun lit the street. One Asian girl was standing in the distance and I photographed her but she didn’t look away. That’s how it all started.

S: Street style photography goes all the way back to the 70s. How do you define street style in the 2020s?

MZ: Street style in 2020s is a whole throwback party to what the cool gurlz looked like when I was in my first grade of primary school in 1996. I’m just missing the Nick Carter hairdo from the Backstreet Boys days.

S: How do you describe your own style?

MZ: I’m having my personal fashion revolution at the moment and it’s COLOURZ & mismatch 😎 I used to be in all-black for years but then this year in May I put on a pair of blue jeans (which I never did my whole life) and the revolution started. My fave piece right now is a neon fluorescent yellow shirt which is actually a bicycle shirt that I thrift-ed. Together with dyed hair and a baby girly pink necklace…YAZZZ GWERLLL HIT THE STREETZ AND GET THAT ICE CREAM YOU WANT!!!
