5 designers to watch, according to the stylist behind @airtomyearth

If Instagram is your go-to place for fashion resources, chances are you’ve stumbled across the gloriously vibrant account @airtomyearth—and if you haven’t, it’s definitely time to get acquainted. Run by Melbourne-born and London-based stylist and art director Jamie-Maree Shipton, @airtomyearth is a glistening treasure trove of fluro-colour, eye-watering jewel tones, kaleidoscopic textures and clashing prints. Shipton has an eye for the avant-garde—her grid is a gallery of new and boundary-pushing design and she has made a name for herself as a champion of young London fashion in particular. While to look at Shipton’s account, the sense of a strong aesthetic shines through—every image is a showcase of something a little different or delightfully weird in fashion—but for Shipton it’s actually quite hard for her to define her signature style.

“It’s something I always get asked—how would you describe your aesthetic—but the longer I’ve been doing this, the harder it gets,” she tells SLEEK. “I think overall it’s just an aesthetic that doesn’t shy away from colour, print, clashing, layering. I’m not a dress and heels kind of stylist—there are always levels to my looks. I look for details and points of difference. I love weird shapes and proportions, as well as clean lines—contradictions. I like to be surprised with new design, which is why I work with a lot of newer designers,” says Shipton.

Having previously worked with the likes of Vogue Italia, Garage and i-D, Shipton platforms exciting new designers like Paula Canovas del Vas, who presented her third collection through a virtual reality installation, or CSM graduate Celia Calderón Asensio, who makes zany knitted tights. Elsewhere, there’s Dom Sebastian (known for his glitchy prints), French crochet designer Lou de Bètoly, and frequently:  the extremely eye-catching jewellery creations of Florence Tétier Bijoux. Shipton prefers to go with her gut rather than trailing the elusive algorithm when it comes to fashion and curation. “There is a new algorithm everyday and if you’re chasing that you let the important things go astray,” she sagely notes. And when it comes to a favourite style icon or influencer, Shipton would rather not say. “I don’t really follow individuals …I’m more interested in how editorials and collections made me feel, rather than who was wearing them.”

Keeping in mind her unique eye for all that’s fresh and boundary-pushing in fashion, we asked Shipton to share her knowledge, and give us her predictions for the designers to keep an eye out for the year ahead.

1. Jordan Dalah

“A fellow Aussie, Jordan studied at CSM in London, which is where I first met him. He released an amazing graduate collection then went on a hiatus to create his next big moment. And finally it’s arrived. He just released his second collection and he has delivered his signature oversized proportions along with some new interesting elements.”

2. Andy Froud

“I just discovered Andy and am in love. His use of texture (velvet is my favourite!) and blue tones reminds me of waves and water, it’s so therapeutic to look at. His bags are also divine. It’s an exciting first menswear collection.”

3. Laura Thomas

“It’s like having a birthday everyday. Each look in Laura’s collection reminds me of a gift. The wrapping-paper-esque prints, the draping and bow like elements. Plus I’m a sucker for a huge puffy sleeve.”

4. Art Hoes by Falarz

Another newer discovery, Falarz brings my body stocking dreams into reality. Cut- outs, clashing fabrics and big belt buckles, not to mention his circle ring “bags”. This collection really excites me and I can’t wait to use it.”

5. Celia Calderon Asensio

I have worked with Celia quite a bit now, but I don’t think I will ever get sick of her hand dyed tie dye tight wonders. She has really made her mark but I think I’m ready to see body stockings and tops as well!”

Bonus: My Daughter Is Better Than Yours

“This just makes me happy. These amazing earring creations come from none other than a young little girl (I think she is 7 or 8!) Stephanie Veuriot of Autrement PR let’s her daughter make magic during craft days of the winter months, and the results are little blobs, discs and modules of pure happiness. These were so fun to use and really made me nostalgic!”
