A Day At the E-Race: Tape That x Mercedes

Since 2015, Berlin has played an integral part in the racing calendar for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, when the first E-Prix took place on the site of the former airport in Tempelhof. The temporary racetrack at the former airfield is firmly rooted in the history of the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team, who competed in Berlin for the first time in 2019. A year later, the team won both World Championship titles at the same venue; taking top honours in both the Team and Drivers’ Championship.

One weekend in May, the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team gathered in Tempelhof for two days of racing for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Driven by a passion for sustainability and innovation, the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team are redefining the conventions of racing, paving the way for a more eco-conscious future in the automobile industry. But this weekend wasn’t all racing. Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team invited Berlin-based art collective Tape That, who are also driven by a similar desire to break the mould, to transform one of their Formula E Race cars into an art work.

Exploring the potential of tape as an art form, Tape That are “driven by the idea that anyone anywhere can pick up a roll of tape and make art with it.” There’s a real history to this burgeoning art, filled with stories about self expression, intuition and a love for creativity. During this weekend, Tape That put their passion for the unconventional to the test, following their intuition to create a one-of-a-kind art piece.
