Bad Corgi is a new mobile game created by artist Ian Cheng for The Serpentine Gallery Digital Commission programme. With additional support from the Rolls-Royce Art Programme, the interactive simulation requires players to assume control of a sheepherding Corgi. The app then introduces opportunities for disaster in the form of herd pollution and lack of control, which all result in a loss of points. Serving as a reflection on the focus and discipline possessed by the human mind, the game also highlights its attraction for distraction and impulsion as well.
‘I see my simulations as a kind of neurological gym, in which art becomes a means to deliberately exercise the feelings of confusion, anxiety and cognitive dissonance that can accompany life in a world of intense change and uncertainty.’ – Ian Cheng
In a game where players are seemingly forced into various stress conditions, the player must learn to accept the pup’s misbehaviours as well as the app itself.
