Anyone that follows Minh-Khai on Instagram, knows that she is a big football and sports fan. She has never made a secret of her great sympathy for BVB. So she was all the more delighted when Neven Subotic, who played for BVB at the very time when her enthusiasm for the club was born, agreed to feature as this episode’s guest. A fan girl moment, so to speak.
Neven’s life story is unusual, exciting, touching and fascinating. When he was two, he fled with his family to Germany before the Yugoslavian war. Here they were only tolerated for 8 years and were not even allowed to leave the country. When he was 10 years old, the family was threatened with deportation back to Bosnia Herzigovina. Only with luck did they get the entry permit to the USA to escape the threat of deportation. There, Neven was discovered by a U17 youth national coach and played for the American junior national team. After that, everything happened very quickly. He returned to Germany at 17 and played for Mainz under Jürgen Klopp. The rest is history. At just 22, he founded the “Neven Subotic Foundation” and recently wrote a book, “Alles geben. Warum der Weg zu einem gerechten Leben bei uns selbst anfängt.“
A conversation about social justice, what it’s like to lose your home and what that does to a person.
