Contemporary art is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of the picturesque valley of Engadin in the Swiss Alps. St. Moritz Art Masters, now in its sixth edition, brings a rich program of art to the unique scenery of St. Moritz and the Engadin.
From 23 August to 1 September 2013, the festival’s comprehensive art programme will present art in public spaces around St. Moritz, as well as in galleries and exhibition spaces. In addition, this year’s edition places a special focus on China, exploring its variety of artistic positions that navigate between tradition and international influences.
An exhibition with works by the artists Ni Youyu, Xue Feng, Li Zhenwei, Liu Wei and Li Xi, will show recent positions from renowned collector’s Uli Sigg world-famous collection, along with shows of works by Chinese art’s most famous names, Ai Weiwei and Fang Lijun. In addition, works by the Chinese painter and sculptor Shao Fan and photographs by the artist Chen Fuli will be on view, and a group show by young Chinese artists from the Sichuan Province. This group of artists provides a unique perspective on a de-centralised view far from the centres of political and economic power in China.
A number of other artistic contributions makes gives the festival an international outlook.
Legendary multi-media-artist Robert Wilson, for example, transformed the interior of the French Church with his eerie “Snowy Owl” video installation. Belgian artist Jan Fabre, the Swiss artist, Olaf Breuning, and German artist Tobias Rehberger provide some of the many highlights awaiting visitors.
